News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This past weekend, a man – whom the Islamic State took responsibility for – executed an attack at the Crossroads Center Mall in St. Cloud. He entered this mall - a place where parents were shopping with their children, where students were taking a break from their studies, and where mall employees were working - with the intention to kill. He managed to stab ten victims and may have succeeded in taking life, if it were not for the heroic actions of off-duty Avon police officer Jason Falconer.

There has been an ever growing list of attacks against the United States and our allies, and they absolutely cannot go unanswered. I want to assure you all that I remain committed to containing and fighting these sources of terror. I will continue to push for a declaration of war against ISIS to be brought to the House Floor, so that we can defeat our enemies once and for all. I will also continue to urge the Senate to pass the SAFE Act, which the House already passed last year. I was proud to vote in favor of the SAFE Act, as it would strengthen security checks on those entering our country.

This week in the House, we took even more measures to pass legislation that would help improve our nation’s overall security. On Wednesday, I supported the Community Counterterrorism Preparedness Act, which would require the Department of Homeland Security to establish a grant program preparing our nation’s first responders for terrorist attack scenarios. The first people on the scene of terrorist attacks must be adequately prepared for any situation in order to effectively save lives, so I was proud to support this vital bill.

It is incredibly important that we enact policies that protect the safety of Americans. Unfortunately, as the largest state sponsor of terrorism, Iran continues to be another major threat to this nation. That is why on Thursday, I, along with the majority of my colleagues, voted to pass the Prohibiting Future Ransom Payments to Iran Act. To learn more about the Prohibiting Future Ransom Payments to Iran Act, and why I support it, click below to watch this week’s Ask Tom video.

Now more than ever, actions must be taken to defend our homeland, and I am incredibly happy with the steps taken to do so this week. Once again, thanks for keeping up with the work I am doing for Minnesota’s Sixth District. Until next week…

Sincerely,
