Dear Friend,

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the State Department suspended almost all passport processing and closed its offices on March 19. As a result, backlogs and wait times for passports have soared. Recently, the State Department declared passport processing “mission-critical” and brought back many of its essential personnel to resume passport processing.

The State Department estimates that it will process 200,000 applications a week, which is about 50 percent of their usual processing rates. Passport processing will occur on a first-come-first-serve basis, and processing times will take at least eight weeks.

Currently, you may submit a passport renewal application via mail only if you meet a set of five criteria. This includes having a passport issued within the last 15 years in your possession. For a full list of criteria, please see here. If you do not meet the requirements for submitting a renewal application via mail, you must file your application in person at an acceptance facility. You can find acceptance facilities nearby by using the State Department’s locator tool. It is recommended that you call your facility in advance to verify that they are open and to make an appointment. To learn what you need to submit your application at an acceptance facility, visit the State Department’s application information page.

Please keep in mind that the State Department can still quickly process a small number of applications in life-or-death emergencies. If you are experiencing such an emergency, like a serious illness, injury, or death in your immediate family that requires you to travel outside the United States within 72 hours, please view the State Department’s webpage.

My team and I stand ready to assist our community during this time of need. For resources to help you and your family navigate through COVID-19, please visit our website. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our offices via the phone numbers below.

Sincerely,
