News from Representative Luria

Dear Friend,

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in new economic hardships and challenges for renters and homeowners throughout our Commonwealth. To ease some of these burdens, Governor Northam requested a temporary moratorium on all eviction proceedings in Virginia, which was recently approved by Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Donald Lemons.

Previously, the Governor put a hold on evictions in Mid-March, but the order expired on May 17th. As a result, eviction lawsuits resumed on May 18th. Under the new moratorium, eviction proceedings cannot occur until after June 28th. This is designed to give Virginians much-needed financial relief as the Northam administration implements a comprehensive rent relief program for the Commonwealth.
