Dear Friend,

Today, we mark the one-year anniversary of one of the darkest days for Virginia Beach. During the tragic mass shooting that took place on May 31, 2019, twelve irreplaceable members of our community lost their lives, and many others were left with physical and mental reminders of the trauma they endured. My heart continues to grieve for those who we lost, their families, and everyone who loved them.

However, we are a resilient community, and have begun to rebuild and honor the memories of those we have lost. In October, the City of Virginia Beach partnered with Sentara Healthcare to open the VB Strong Center. This is a community center equipped to provide support and resources for those impacted by the shooting. The VB Strong Center hosts a wide variety of programs and provides assistance. During this solemn anniversary, I want to direct you to some VB Strong Center Strong resources to assist our community during this trying time. To learn more, please scroll down.

Preparing Well E-Book

Recently, VB Strong clinicians wrote a free e-book called Preparing Well to support individuals going through the healing process after a tragedy. This e-book has helpful information, including chapters on survivor’s remorse, finding balance in uncertainty, and challenging irrational thoughts. You can read this e-book by clicking here.

Counseling and Support

The VB Strong Center’s team includes prepared and licensed mental health professionals who are ready to provide one-on-one support. These include connecting individuals to long-term community resources for healing and recovery. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all counseling programs will be provided via telehealth. If you know anyone struggling from the events of May 31, 2019, please call 757-507-7200 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. or email vbstrongcenter@sentara.com.

Online Events

The VB Strong Center hosts many events designed to assist our community with the trauma of this tragic shooting. These events cover a wide range of topics, such as understanding your emotional needs, creating a self-care plan, and destressing. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all VB Strong Center programs have been moved to WebEx and Zoom. Registration is required to join these events. To find events and register, please click here.

Virtual Remembrance Ceremony

Today at 4:06 p.m., there will be an online ceremony at LoveForVB.com. This ceremony will contain a variety of tributes designed to allow us to remember and reflect on this tragedy in our own ways and on our own time. Coastal Virginians are also encouraged to leave their porch lights on, either in blue or white, in remembrance.

Please know that my team and I stand ready to assist our community during this time of need. For resources to help you and your family navigate through COVID-19, please visit our website. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our offices via the phone numbers below.

Sincerely,
