This week in the Financial Services Committee: Student Loan Debt Crisis

Watch my full remarks during this hearing by clicking on photo above.

I am focused on working with my colleagues to address the student loan debt crisis. The Financial Services Committee highlighted this important issue. We have a 1.5 trillion-dollar student loan problem. However, the problem that Congress must focus on is the underlying cost of education that is driving students into debt. Prior to Congress, I served on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, overseeing the 26 UW System schools, including UW-Parkside and UW-Milwaukee. I voted to stop increases of tuition. This allowed students to come out with less debt. We should focus on empowering states to make these cost-effective solutions.

Never Forget

This week, we remember the thousands of Americans who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. 18 years later, we must never forget them and the heroes who risked their lives to save others when tragedy struck. In the U.S. Capitol, there is a plaque honoring the men and women of Flight 93. When the flight was hijacked by terrorists, the passengers and crew fought back, making the ultimate sacrifice to save fellow Americans. The terrorists were believed to be targeting the U.S. Capitol. We must never forget those we lost, the bravery, and sacrifice witnessed on 9/11.

Roosevelt Conservation Caucus

I joined the Congressional Roosevelt Conservation Caucus to find solutions to environmental problems. From the shores of Lake Michigan to the Ice Age Trail, we are home to some of the best natural wonders in the world. As a member of this caucus, I work with my colleagues to protect our vital water resources, expand our national parks, and support research and policies that promote energy efficiency. This caucus promotes commonsense solutions to environmental priorities at home.
