Ending the Stigma

Mental health is an issue that deserves attention. The stigma surrounding mental health must end. That's why I held a Children's Mental Health Forum earlier this month to discuss mental health issues impacting our children. Experts from the U.S. Department of Education, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Racine Collaborative for Children's Mental Health, and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin joined me for a conversation on innovative and comprehensive mental health services available to our community. This is an issue that requires support from federal, state, and local partners.

If you missed the forum, you can read more about it in the Racine Journal Times here.

The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act

I cosponsored a bipartisan bill, the National Suicide Designation Act. We have 9-1-1 as the universal phone number for emergency services. This bill would designate 9-8-8 as the number to call for the National Suicide Hotline Network. Congress is working with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to create a plan of action to make this a reality. Many in our community are all too familiar with the mental health crisis and it is important to ensure our friends and family have this resource available to them. This is one way to increase accessibility for those suffering and in distress. If you or a family member are in need of help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Supporting Veterans

Wisconsin's First Congressional District is home to more than 45,000 veterans. Far too often, veterans return home from combat and have difficulty transitioning into civilian life. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries, and other conditions may not be visible to the eye, but are battles dealt with by our veterans--often battles fought alone. It's critical we do all we can to support veterans and ensure mental health care and treatment is available. This year, my amendment to fund the Department of Veterans Affairs' suicide prevention and treatment programs passed through the House of Representatives. I also hired a full-time Director of Military and Veterans Affairs through the Wounded Warrior Fellowship Program. If you have issues with the VA, please contact my office for assistance: 608-752-4050.

As always, please reach out to me if you have issues with a federal agency or want to share an opinion. Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!

On Wisconsin,

Bryan G. Steil
Member of Congress
