News from Representative Peters

January 17, 2017

Dear Friend,

As you may know, the American intelligence community released a report last week regarding Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential electionTheir report concluded Russian operatives - at the direction of President Vladimir Putin- conducted targeted cyber-attacks against American individuals and institutions with the goal of undermining our electoral process and influencing the outcome of our election.

What We Know

As I previously stated, we cannot know with certainty whether these hacks would have changed the outcome. However, any threat to our democracy should not be taken lightly. These actions are without precedent, and should alarm every American.

What We Can Do About It

Americans of all political parties are rightfully worried about this unprecedented foreign interference in our election and we deserve answers. To protect our democracy, we need a fact-based, independent, bipartisan investigation to comprehensively review these attacks and protect against future ones.

I cosponsored the Protecting our Democracy Act, which would establish the National Commission on Foreign Interference in the 2016 Election to allow for a full bipartisan Congressional investigation of the Russian cyberattacks.

I hope you will take the time to share your thoughts on this with me.

Which of the following statements best describes your feelings about the intelligence reports released last week?

( )I'm alarmed by these attacks and concerned about the potential for future attacks
( )I believe further investigation is needed
( )I do not believe these attacks occurred
 ( )I'm not sure

Moving Forward

The best and brightest of our intelligence community – many who risk their lives in defense of our nation and deserve our respect and trust – have done their duty and provided us with this assessment. Now is the time to stand together as patriots in a bipartisan defense of our democracy to ensure that this never happens again.
