Dear Friend,

In the wake of the COVID-19 public health crisis, we all must come together to support our communities. One of the ways you can help is donating blood. The FDA has issued new guidance to address the urgent need for blood donations during this pandemic. Below are the new blood donations regulations.

Who can give blood

Due to the urgent need for blood donations during COVID-19, the FDA has change certain restrictions regarding blood donation:

How to give blood

When you go to give blood, there are a few items you should have with you. You will need to show an ID in order to give blood. This is to ensure age requirements and confirm your identity. After, you will need to give a brief health history to one of the staff members at the location you are giving blood. This is to ensure you have not been exposed to anything that would prevent you from giving blood. Then, you will donate blood, which takes roughly 8 to 10 minutes. The process is relatively painless and only side effect is the potential to become lightheaded, so it is recommended to sit for about 5 to 10 minutes after donating blood. For more frequently asked questions regarding donating blood during COVID-19, you may visit the Red Cross FAQ page here.
