News from Representative Carson

April 24, 2020

Dear Friend,

This week, Congress passed bipartisan legislation that provides nearly $500 billion more dollars to help our country fight the COVID-19 crisis. This bill will improve the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to ensure greater access for small businesses who were previously shut out by big lenders. Additionally, this bill provides needed funding for hospitals and health care workers and will help to increase our ability to test for COVID-19. Learn more about the bill here.

This is a good step forward, but we need to do much more. I am working with my colleagues to craft a bigger and bolder stimulus package that focuses on our economic recovery. But first, we must stop the transmission of COVID-19. We cannot have a healthy economy without healthy people. That is why defeating the COVID-19 pandemic needs to be our number one priority. Now, more than ever, is the time for strong leadership and real results. I vow to keep working hard to support our public health leaders and support our frontline workers’ efforts.

I spoke more about these ongoing priorities in a virtual town hall last night hosted by the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper. My fellow panelists and I discussed COVID-19’s impact on our community, particularly communities of color, and the additional steps we must take before we can begin to ease social distancing. A continued and pronounced rise in COVID-19 infections makes it clear that we’re not there yet. However, if we stay the course, we can eventually get people back to work and bring back aspects of public life without sacrificing people’s health. If you missed this town hall, you can watch it here.

And I also would like to wish a ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ to my fellow Muslims in Indiana, across America, and around the world who are observing Ramadan. This month-long period of fasting and fellowship is very important in our religion. Sadly, many of us will have to remain apart for this year’s observance, but I know that the strength of our faith will keep us united in spirit.
