Dear Friends,

On this Memorial Day weekend, we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  Throughout the 10th District, we had beautiful and moving Memorial Day ceremonies, as well as events to honor our veterans and bring together our communities.  We appreciate the privilege of visiting with so many veterans and constituents throughout the District on this Memorial Day weekend.   For many of these events we were joined by Anthony Barnes, a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 2006-2010 as a Master at Arms E-5, and who now serves as our veteran and military casework manager in our office.  Anthony is available to our veterans for any constituent issues or assistance with benefits offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Leesburg Memorial Day Service

Rep. Comstock at the Leesburg Memorial Day Service

On Memorial Day, we joined veterans, the VFW Post #1177 and friends in Leesburg for a moving Memorial Day ceremony. We enjoyed hearing from guest speaker, Lieutenant General Susan Lawrence, U.S. Army (Ret.), who served as the Army's Chief Information Officer and is currently a Senior Vice President at Booz Allen and a leader in the firm's defense business. After the ceremony, wreaths were laid down at the war memorials to honor our brave servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Memorial Day, we also attended the Memorial Day Ceremony in Sterling Park hosted by Sterling Park American Legion Post 150 and held at the Veterans Memorial.  We appreciated having the opportunity to donate 4 new flags that were flown over the U.S. Capitol and raised at the Veterans Memorial in Sterling Park. We also appreciated the opportunity to visit with the many Boy Scouts and their troop leaders who attended to salute our veterans.

Salute to Our Troops 1k/5k/10k
On Memorial Day, our District staff greeted runners and joined supporters at the “Ringing in Hope Salute to Our Troops” 1k/5k/10k in Ashburn, which benefited Boulder Crest Retreat in Bluemont.  Boulder Crest is a retreat campus for our combat veterans and their families to rest and recharge, that also provides an intensive program for veterans with PTSD.  Ken and Julia Falke, who founded Boulder Crest, help our veterans reconnect with their families after coming home from battle.  This Saturday Boulder Crest will be holding its 4th Annual Boulder Crest HoeDown to benefit our military heroes.  You can read more about Boulder Crest and the services they offer here.

Manassas Welcomes Ride 2 Recovery Veteran Cyclists

Rep. Comstock with Ride 2 Recovery riders
On Memorial Day, we had the pleasure of visiting with veteran riders and friends participating in the Ride 2 Recovery cycling event. The veteran cyclists started at the Vice President's residence on Monday morning and are riding to Virginia Beach over this week. On Monday, they stopped for lunch at the Brown's Manassas Subaru dealership - a big supporter of our veterans. The “Ride 2 Recovery” organization helps veterans recover from traumatic brain injuries and PTSD.  I appreciate the important work being done on behalf of our injured veterans, including a study using wearable technology that helps veterans manage PTSD in real time. We were joined by Manassas Councilman and Vice Mayor, Marc Aveni as well.

Berryville Memorial Day Ceremony: "Diversity in Sacrifice, Unity in Remembrance"

Rep. Comstock at Berryville's Memorial Day Ceremony

The Town of Berryville held their Memorial Day ceremony sponsored by the American Legion Post and VFW Post 9760, on Sunday. This year's theme, "Diversity in Sacrifice, Unity in Remembrance" was on display in Major General Jerry Curry's remarks.  Major General Curry is a decorated combat veteran, Army Aviator, Paratrooper and Ranger who served his country in the military and as a Presidential political appointee for nearly 40 years. This year's program, coordinated by Berryville's Lloyd Williams American Legion Post-41 included performances from Clarke County High School's marching band and school choir. A special thanks to Jim Wink, Tom Vorisek, and the Clarke County Memorial Day Committee for this special event.

Lovettsville Mayfest

Lovettsville MayFest Mobile Office

On Saturday my staff and I hosted our Mobile Office at Lovettsville MayFest on the Town Green to provide constituent service and identify opportunities where we can assist on casework matters with federal agencies. My veteran and military case work manager, Anthony Barnes, is based out of Winchester and is a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy as a Master at Arms E-5, and has the knowledge and experience necessary to provide personal assistance to veterans in contacting and receiving the resources they need and the benefits they deserve from the Department of Veteran Affairs.  You may contact him at Anthony.Barnes@mail.house.gov.

Thank you to all of the men and women who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation and our freedoms. Our gratitude and prayers will always be with them and their families.

Thank you,

Barbara Comstock
Member of Congress
