LOCAL DECORATED FIGHTER PILOT
I was able to thank Olympia's own WWII Fighter Ace, Cmdr. Clarence "Spike" Borley at the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Dear Friends,

This Memorial Day, we honor those who courageously served our country. In the spirit of all they do for us, I wanted to share updates on what I'm doing in Congress to make sure veterans in our communities are recognized and our fallen servicemembers are remembered.

BILLY FRANK JR. TELL YOUR STORY ACT
In honor of the civil rights hero and Marine veteran Billy Frank Jr., I introduced the Billy Frank Jr. Tell Your Story Act in the U.S. Congress. This bill would add Billy's name to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, preserve the location of the signing of the Medicine Creek Treaty, and allow tribes to provide input on the materials developed at the Medicine Creek Treaty site.

Earlier this month, I spoke on the House floor about this legislation and what it means to our area's history:

VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT

Congress created the Veterans History Project in 2000 to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American veterans. These heroes need to tell their story so that future generations can better understand our collective history. If you or your loved one is a veteran, you can find more information on getting them interviewed, or how to interview veterans in our area at loc.gov/vets. We want many voices from the South Sound to be a part of this important project.

FIGHTER ACES CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL
It's a fantastic feeling when you see your legislation come to life. Last week, I joined my colleagues in Congress, the American Fighter Aces Association, the Museum of Flight and several Fighter Aces themselves to present the Congressional Gold Medal to these American heroes. Congressman Sam Johnson (R-TX) and I introduced the American Fighter Aces Congressional Gold Medal Act in 2013, and President Obama signed the legislation into law last May.

Fun fact, President George Washington was the first recipient of our nation's highest civilian award! All Congressional Gold Medal recipients can be found at history.house.gov.

Happy Memorial Day to you and your family.

Denny Heck
