News from Representative Carson

February 7, 2020

Dear Friend,

I want to tell you about a great piece of legislation we passed in the House this week. It's called the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, and its passage represents a bold step forward for American workers.

Through the years, unions have made our country greater. They helped outlaw child labor, establish a 40-hour work week, ensure safer working conditions, better pay, employer-sponsored health coverage and much more.

But in recent years, unions have been under attack from so-called right-to-work laws. In our state, and in many others, these anti-worker provisions have weakened unions and given employers, and anti-union special interests, greater ability to call the shots.

It's no surprise then, that as union membership has declined, the 1-percent's share of our nation's wealth has skyrocketed.

The PRO Act would help to reverse this troubling trend and advance vital protections for working Americans, including:

  • Introducing strong, enforceable penalties for companies and executives that violate workers’ rights;
  • Expanding workers’ collective bargaining rights and closing loopholes corporations use to exploit workers; and
  • Strengthening workers’ access to fair union elections and requiring corporations to respect the results.

This legislation has strong support from American unions, including the AFL-CIO, United Auto Workers, and many others.

It's time to level the playing field for American workers, and build an economy that works for everyone, not just the super rich and mega corporations. We can achieve this when we empower workers to earn a fair share of the wealth they help create.
