News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This week began with Tax Day, so I started off the busy week speaking on the House Floor to condemn the inappropriate and unfortunate conduct of the IRS. I strongly believe that the American people should not fear that a government agency will make decisions based on partisan politics. Click here to watch my speech.

The Right to Bear Arms

On Tuesday, I introduced legislation that would strengthen the rights for law-abiding gun purchasers. The Firearm Due Process Protection Act would ensure that Americans are able to correct false information that causes the federal government to deny their Constitutional right to own a firearm.

Currently the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) provides for an appeal process if an individual is denied a firearm because of inaccurate information. However, in January, the FBI halted the appeals process all together.

My legislation would fix this unjust problem by mandating that a determination be made on an appeal within sixty days. It would also give Americans the right to seek a court judgement to correct invalid information if the FBI does not act on an appeal within the deadline.

I have always been a strong advocate of the Second Amendment, and I will not stand for the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens to be trampled on. Citizens who go through the legal process of ensuring their own personal protection should not face unnecessary blockades, and above all; citizens must always have timely recourse when denied a fundamental right. Service Academy Night

Next month my office will be holding a Service Academy Night for individuals interested in applying for a nomination to one of the service academies. Each year I have the distinct honor of assisting individuals wishing to attend one of our nation’s service academies. I have an enormous amount of respect for those who wish to serve their country and I am looking forward to helping these individuals fulfill their goals in any way that I can. Once again, thanks for staying updated on the work I am doing both in D.C. and in Minnesota, and until next week…

Sincerely,
