News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

The days are getting longer and spring is officially in the air, and while I’m glad for some warmer weather, losing that hour of sleep sure hit me hard. However, we didn’t let it slow us down too much as there was a lot on the agenda this week.

A Historic Trip

You may have heard that I will accompany the President and Members of Congress on a trip to Cuba soon. This trip marks the first time in 88 years a sitting President has traveled to Cuba. While the historical nature of this trip is very exciting, it is important to remember that improving relations will be extremely beneficial to Minnesotans and the Cuban people alike.

I took my first trip to Cuba a little less than a year ago, and was struck by the harmful effects that the embargo has on small business owners and regular people just trying to get by. Instead of ignoring the Cuban people, I believe that it is time for American businesses and influences to enter Cuba and introduce the ideas of democracy and capitalism. Additionally, improving relations with Cuba will have a positive impact in Minnesota as trade relations will create new opportunities for businesses and the agriculture industry in our great state.

For these reasons, Representative Kathy Castor and I introduced H.R. 3238, The Cuba Trade Act of 2015. I believe that the time has come for a change in policy towards Cuba, and I am optimistic about what improved relations with our island neighbor will bring.

Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month and in order to celebrate the many women who have left their mark and changed our nation for the better, I have been highlighting the incredible lives of American women. This week, I spoke on the House Floor to honor Brigadier General Sandra Best who became the first woman general in the Minnesota National Guard.

I actually had the honor of meeting Sandra this week as she was in Washington to judge the annual Minnesota hotdish competition. Unfortunately, the hotdish competition was canceled, so Sandra and I took the time to sit down and chat about the Minnesota National Guard.

I also decided to dedicate my weekly Ask Tom video to Women’s History Month and give a little insight to what this month means to me. Click here to check it out!

ICYMI: Mobile Office Hours

Next week, my district office will begin mobile office hours so that we can make ourselves even more available to the people of Minnesota’s Sixth District. Among our excellent staff, we have a number of individuals who specialize in casework. If you are unable to get an answer from a federal agency in a timely manner or feel like you have been treated unfairly, my office caseworkers may be able to resolve the problem or get you the information that you need. Click here to stay updated on my upcoming mobile office hours!

Thanks for staying updated on my work in Minnesota and Washington, and until next week…

Sincerely,
