News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This past week was jam packed with meetings, events like the Minnesota Congressional Hockey Challenge, and even my 55th birthday. Thank you everyone who sent me kind birthday wishes, it was much appreciated!

Celebrating Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, and to honor that, I will be paying tribute to the many women who have left their lasting mark in history, and who have paved the way for generations of women to come.

One woman who I would like to shine the spotlight on is Sandra Best, who just last week became the first female Brigadier General in Minnesota’s National Guard. Brigadier General Sandra Best is a real trailblazer who broke down barriers and forged a path that other women are sure to follow. I want to applaud Sandra for her hard work, and thank her for inspiring women all over the state and nation!

I also began celebrating this important month by becoming a cosponsor of H.R. 4336, the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) Arlington Inurnment Restoration Act. WASPs were an incredibly brave group of women who served during World War II, and even though they earned veteran status in 1977, they still are not allowed a military burial in Arlington National Cemetery. Women’s History Month is meant to recognize the contributions of great women throughout our history, and I believe this legislation will do just that.

In Case You Missed It

A few weeks ago, I introduced H.R. 4518, the CREATE Jobs Act. The United States’ corporate income tax is the highest in the world- causing jobs, people and tax dollars to be sent overseas to countries that have far more business friendly rates.

A researcher with the Heritage Foundation wrote in support of this bill saying, “Bringing our corporate tax rates in line with other developed countries is critical if we want to stop the ongoing stampede of businesses leaving our shores.”

Additionally, Americans for Tax Reform is urging other Members of Congress to support this bill because it will, “… reform the corporate tax rate and allow the U.S. to better compete in the global economy.”

This vital piece of legislation will help our country’s future by encouraging the creation of more American jobs, increasing our GDP and raising wages for American workers. To learn more about this new legislation, click here to read my full press release.

Taking Time for Students

This week I met with students visiting from St. John’s University and College of St. Benedict and had a skype session with students from Sauk Rapids High School.

I had great conversations with these students, and they asked me a variety of questions such as what my day-to-day work in Congress includes. I truly admire students who take an active interest in the world around them and want to participate in government. I encourage students to consider applying for internships in my office for the 2016 fall semester so they can learn firsthand about the legislative process. To apply, click here.
