Dear Friend,

Thank you very much for signing up for our eNewsletter. It is an honor to serve as your Representative. It was another busy week in our Nation's Capitol, and I wanted to give you these updates.

National Adoption Day
Last year, my family was blessed to adopt twin girls, Ivy and Lynette. Tomorrow happens to be their 4th birthday, as well as National Adoption Day!  My family cannot imagine life without Ivy and Lynette, and now it is my goal to help other families learn about adoption. Right now our country is in need of adoptive families. There are nearly 400,000 children in the U.S. without permanent homes, and the 30,000 children that "age out" of foster care programs each year will face unlimited hurdles. Yesterday, I had a chance to speak about Ivy and Lynette on the House floor and the importance of raising awareness about adoption. You can watch my speech in the video below and learn more about National Adoption Day at www.nationaladoptionday.org. Happy Birthday Ivy and Lynette!

President Obama's Announcement on Immigration
Last night, the President announced an immigration plan that completely ignores the constitution and is contrary to previous statements he has made. We all agree our immigration system is broken, but the President needs to respect the process and allow Congress to deliberate and, if necessary, pass legislation that reflects the will of the people. President Obama is encouraging more people to enter our country illegally in hopes of receiving future amnesty. We need to start enforcing our own laws, and Congress needs to use the tools given to us  by the Constitution to combat the President's executive order, including the power of the purse and blocking non-security related nominations. You can read my full response to the President's executive order on my website.

New Committee Assignment
Yesterday, I learned I have been selected to serve on the House Energy and Commerce Committee in the 114th Congress.  The Energy and Commerce Committee is the oldest standing legislative committee in the House, and it has jurisdiction over  issues that are deeply important to Oklahoma and the 2nd District, such as health care, energy, telecommunications, and commerce. The Committee overseas many federal entities, including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency. It is truly an honor to be selected to serve on such an influential committee under Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI). I am looking forward to providing an Oklahoma business perspective as the committee works to address important issues like regulatory and health care reform. You can read more about the Energy and Commerce Committee in my press release.
