H.R. 1: For The People

Dear San Franciscan,

We heard from the American people. They want a transformative House Democratic Majority that rejects the culture of corruption in Washington and restores transparency, accountability and unity in government.

On Day One, the Democratic House honored that promise by introducing H.R. 1: the For The People Act – our bold, transformative legislation to put the power back in the hands of the people and restore the people’s faith that government works for the public interest, not the special interests.

My colleagues and I stood on the steps of the U.S. Capitol today ahead of the passage of H.R. 1, the For The People Act.

Today, the House of Representatives passed this historic package of democracy and anti-corruption reforms. The package includes:

  • Campaign Finance Reform  Ending the dominance of big money in politics by:
    • Requiring transparent disclosure of big-money contributors and special interests
    • Creating a powerful matching system for small donations that amplifies citizens’ voices in politics and breaks the special interest stranglehold on Congress
    • Pushing back on Citizens United
  • Restoring Our Democracy  Ensuring clean and fair elections by:
    • Creating nationwide automatic voter registration and expanding early voting and absentee voting
    • Ensuring that individuals who have completed felony sentences have their full rights restored
    • Prohibiting voter roll purges and ending partisan gerrymandering
  • Ethics and Accountability  Ensuring public officials work for the public interest by:
    • Breaking the influence economy in Washington and increasing accountability by expanding conflict of interest law and divestment requirements
    • Slowing the revolving door
    • Preventing Members of Congress from serving on corporate boards and requiring presidents to disclose their tax returns

We passed H.R. 1 to break the grip of the special interests and ensure that the American people come first in our democracy – because when we do, we can make progress for every family and community, including safeguarding workers’ rights, increasing paychecks, lowering health and prescription drug costs for families, rebuilding America, protecting clean air and clean water, and more.

House Democrats’ new Majority is hard at work to deliver results For The People in a transparent, bipartisan and unifying way. Just last week, Democrats passed two long-overdue, commonsense, bipartisan background checks bills: Congressman Mike Thompson’s H.R. 8 universal background bill, and Whip Jim Clyburn’s H.R. 1112 bill to address the Charleston Loophole. This week, we continued our drumbeat of action For The People as we introduced strong, overwhelmingly popular legislation – including the “Save the Internet Act,” bicameral legislation to restore net neutrality protections, and a bipartisan, robust, long-term reauthorization of the life-saving Violence Against Women Act

And we are just getting started. Over the coming weeks and months, we will bring legislation to the Floor that puts the American people first – delivering on our For The People agenda!

best regards,
