News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

Punxsutawney Phil officially made his prediction that we are going to have an early spring. However, after the snow storm that Minnesota had this week, we know better than to get too excited. I hope that everyone in the Sixth District stayed safe and warm!

My week in Washington was filled with various meetings, important votes, and even a brief stint emceeing the Minnesota State Society’s annual walleye dinner!

We Must Not Underestimate Iran

Last year, the President used incredibly poor judgment and helped implement a disastrous nuclear agreement with Iran – which I voted against. Since then, Iran has tested ballistic missiles and even took twelve American sailors hostage, proving that this agreement has done nothing but fuel Iran’s aggression.

That is why this week I voted in favor of H.R. 3662, the Iran Terror Finance Transparency Act. This important legislation would implement improved congressional oversight and guarantee that the President cannot lift sanctions against those involved with the Iran ballistic missile program or those responsible for acts of terror. We absolutely cannot underestimate the threat that Iran presents to our nation and the global community.

Commemorating a Congressman

Earlier this week I introduced H.R. 4425 – with the support of the entire Minnesota House delegation- to commemorate the late Minnesota Congressman Eugene McCarthy by designating the St. John’s post office in his honor.

This year would have marked Eugene McCarthy’s 100th birthday, and we hope to honor his work in Washington and back in Minnesota through this designation. To read my press release on this piece of legislation, click here

Ending Operation Choke Point

In 2013, the Department of Justice (DOJ) established Operation Choke Point, which allows the DOJ and FDIC to pressure banks and other financial institutions into cutting off relationships with legitimate businesses despised by the Obama Administration, like gun shops and pay day lenders.

Operation Choke Point is an extreme abuse of executive power, which is why this week I voted for the Financial Institution Customer Protection Act. This vital legislation would prevent federal banking agencies from abusing executive power to terminate a legal business relationship with a financial institution. I have always opposed over-the-top government regulations that continue to strangle American businesses, and this legislation is a step in the right direction.

Thank you everyone for staying updated on my work here in D.C., and until next week…

Sincerely,
