Friend,

This week, I announced the introduction of my first bill, H.R. 2149, the Exposing the Financing of Human Trafficking Act. This bipartisan legislation holds countries accountable for their involvement in financing human trafficking crimes. Countries who turn a blind eye to the illicit financing of human trafficking will not receive U.S. foreign aid. Check out some highlights from this week’s rollout…

150-billion-dollar industry

When we review countries that are eligible for U.S. aid, we need to know that they're partners in fighting human trafficking. The International Labor Organization estimates more than $150 billion in illegal profit is made from human trafficking. My bill will require countries to prove they are preventing, investigating, and prosecuting crimes related to the financing of human trafficking.

Going After the Money

Combating human trafficking isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue: there are nearly 20 cosponsors on my bill, including Wisconsin Representatives Gwen Moore, Mark Pocan, and Jim Sensenbrenner. We need to take advantage of these opportunities where we can find common ground and make a real difference. I’m hopeful the House will bring this bill to a vote soon.

I joined Kenosha County Sheriff Dave Beth, Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling, Racine Police Deputy Chief Todd Schulz, Sturtevant Police Chief Sean Marschke, Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave, and Salem Lakes Administrator Mike Murdock to discuss my bill. Understanding where this money comes from and where it’s going gives countries the ability to crack down on these crimes. Law enforcement officials across Wisconsin are working hard to prevent human trafficking in our communities.
