Strengthening Higher Education

The work of the Education and the Workforce Committee has resulted in the House passing bipartisan legislation that will strengthen career and technical education in our district, in Pennsylvania, and across the country.

I recently hosted Chairwoman Virginia Foxx, the chair of the committee, in our district to meet with local education leaders and to tour Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and Millersville University. I was proud to bring her to our community and show her just a couple of the great higher education institutions we have in our district.

You can learn more about our bipartisan legislation here, read about Chairwoman Foxx’s visit here, and watch a short news segment about her visit here.

Restoring Fiscal Responsibility

For too long Congress has been governing from one funding crisis to the next. I was sent to Congress not to prop up the failed status quo, but to help end it. I serve on the House Budget Committee and the budget we passed does just that.  It will put us on a path towards regular order and fiscal sanity. It will grow our economy, create more opportunity for working families, and reignite the American Dream.

Our plan balances the budget in 10 years, controls federal spending, strengthens and secures Medicare, and supports robust funding for our troops to keep our homeland safe. Importantly, this plan also provides instructions for necessary fundamental tax reform that will reduce rates, simplify the code, and create jobs. It also uses a process called reconciliation to address mandatory spending, which hasn’t been done in more than a decade.

I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to advance this budget to bring greater accountability and responsibility to the way we govern. You can learn more about this important legislation here. You can also read about the reforms I’d like to see made to the budget process here.

Holding Our Adversaries Accountable

With my support, the House this week overwhelmingly passed strong sanctions against Iran, North Korea, and Russia. Iran is the global leader in state-sponsored terrorism. North Korea continues to develop and test weapons that can reach the United States. Russia claims sovereign nations as its own, conducts cyber-attacks aimed at dismantling democracy, including the United States, and props up the murderous Assad regime in Syria.

This bipartisan package of sanctions renews our commitment to our allies and gives the United States the leverage needed to hold these nations accountable for their actions. I am glad House leadership is being responsive to this pressing issue, and I am hopeful President Trump will support this effort and sign it into law.
