News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

Over the weekend the East Coast got a little taste of what we go through on a regular basis here in Minnesota…and to say that it had an impact would be an understatement. Even though the federal government was closed down for a portion of the week, snow wasn’t going to stand in our way. So, in true Minnesotan fashion, my office remained open.

Due to the weather, the House postponed votes so I stayed in the district but despite the last minute change of plans, we had a busy and productive week in Minnesota!

Celebrating Minnesota Business

I had the opportunity to speak at the Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce PACE Business of the Year Awards, which celebrated three businesses in Elk River that have had a positive impact on the community. The three businesses recognized were Coborn’s Elk River as Employer of the Year, ReNew You Medical Spa as New Business of the Year, and Zylstra Harley-Davidson as the 2015 Business of the Year.

Opening and running a small business is not easy, but it is definitely a worthwhile venture. Small and local businesses and the people who run them are truly what make our communities go round. They bring commerce, jobs and great products to the area as well as help to create a unique community identity. I was thrilled to honor these businesses this past week and I thank them for everything they contribute to the Sixth District.

National School Choice Week

This week is National School Choice Week, which is a time to recognize and celebrate variety and opportunity within our education system.

As the father of seven children, I have come to learn that our education system must be individual-oriented. I strongly believe that Minnesota parents and teachers are better suited than Washington bureaucrats to understand what kind of education their child requires. That is why I support the parent’s right to choose the public, private, religious, magnet, or online school that best fits their child’s needs.

To honor school choice, last week, I visited Cologne Academy and Kaleidoscope Charter School. Both of these schools are charter schools in Minnesota’s Sixth District, and they have been doing an excellent job educating the generation of tomorrow.

I was also able to visit St. Joseph’s Catholic School, meet with students and learn about their solar project.

I have also participated in google hangouts with High Schools in the Sixth District, and earlier this month had the Sauk-Rapids School District Superintendent out to Washington D.C. as my guest to the 2016 State of the Union.

Our children are our future, and ensuring that each and every child has the education that they deserve will guarantee our nation’s success.

Thank you for keeping up with all of the work that I am doing for Minnesota’s Sixth District and until next week…

Sincerely,
