Dear Friend,

During another busy week in Washington, I advocated for America's bravest men and women, voted to help our regional economy, and more. Scroll down for a recap!

Upholding My Commitment to American Heroes

Following an active Veterans Day weekend in Coastal Virginia, I returned to the nation’s capital to support a bipartisan slate of bills to help local veterans and their families.

The House overwhelmingly passed critical legislation, including Congresswoman Julia Brownley’s Deborah Sampson Act. As a member of the Women Veterans Task Force, I helped shape this landmark legislation, which aims to create equitable access to health care, housing, legal services, and other resources and benefits for women veterans. This is especially important today, when 17 percent of the post-9/11 veteran population are women.

Another bill that passed was Congressman Joe Cunningham’s VA Tele-hearing Modernization Act. The VA Tele-hearing Modernization Act would allow veterans to appear in cases before the Board of Veterans' Appeals by picture and voice transmission from facilities other than those at the VA. This bill addresses a chief concern that I heard at my most recent town hall, where Eastern Shore constituents and leaders conveyed the need for flexible communication options between the VA and residents in rural areas.

Every day, Congress should continue finding new ways to serve our nation's heroes. I was pleased to see the House pass legislation that prioritizes our women veterans, streamlines communications between veterans and the VA, and more. My hope is Congress keeps up the pace and continues to ease burdens for America’s bravest men and women.

Supporting Virginia Workers, Jobs, and Entrepreneurship

Last Friday, I voted for a bill to reauthorize the Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank for 10 years, create new programs that connect foreign buyers with U.S. exporters, and strengthen the bank’s support for small businesses. The Ex-Im Bank supports American workers by financing the exportation of American-made goods from companies nationwide, including small businesses.

The Ex-Im Bank has provided significant assistance to local businesses throughout Hampton Roads. Since 2014, the bank has provided $38 million in financing and insurance to local exporters located in Virginia’s Second Congressional District. When we include Virginia's Third and Fourth Congressional Districts, the total value of the Ex-Im Bank's assistance to Hampton Roads balloons to $105.9 million.

Reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank is good for our Commonwealth and nation. The bank helps small businesses thrive in global markets, and it allows America to remain a manufacturing powerhouse. The bank’s growth also could spur new business for U.S. flag vessels, which is essential to our Hampton Roads economy. I’ll keep fighting for Virginia workers to ensure this critical legislation gets signed into law.
