BREAKING: Rep. Scott Taylor Calls for Congressional Investigation Into TRICARE Dental Program on Behalf of Active Duty Military Families

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Scott Taylor sent a letter this week to the Chairwoman and Ranking member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations requesting an investigation into the historically-low reimbursement rates under TRICARE's Dental Plan that has forced many providers to end their practice of servicing military families.

Virginia's Second Congressional District, represented by Congressman Taylor, is home to eight major military installations, including the largest naval base in the world, and one of the largest active duty and retired military populations in the United States.

Over the past year, dozens of constituents have come forward alleging that the dental plan, currently administered by United Concordia, is forcing many Active Duty Military Families in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia to seek care out-of-network due to an insufficient number of providers who accept the plan. Providers have also weighed in, saying that the fees collected through the TRICARE dental plan have been lowered in recent years, leading many providers to no longer accept military families. In many cases the fees do not even cover the overhead costs required to perform routine dental procedures.

"Our office has heard from dozens of service members, their families, and dental providers over our time in office. Clearly, the new TRICARE contract's reimbursement rates are not sustainable for providers, thus forcing them to withdraw from the network and creating an unacceptable burden on our military families," said Congressman Scott Taylor.

The letter requests that the Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations launch an investigation to determine whether or not the current TRICARE Dental plan is meeting its commitment of providing a robust network of qualified dental care providers that addresses the dental care needs of Active Duty Military Families in Virginia's Second Congressional District and across the greater Hampton Roads region.
