News from Congressman Scott Peters

April 2, 2015

Dear Friend,

San Diego is known for our collaborative, problem-solving attitude -- a San Diego-style that I'm working every day to foster here in Washington, D.C. This newsletter outlines several areas in which San Diego is leading the way -- from our region's leadership in the cybersecurity field to our expertise in craft beer! It also includes updates on steps I have taken to fix our broken immigration system and my new position as Senior Whip.

Cybersecurity Forum

Recently, Space and Naval Warfare Systems (SPAWAR) Command hosted a cybersecurity summit to discuss how San Diego is primed to take the lead in the growing cybersecurity sector. Protecting our nation from cyber attacks is only growing in importance, and San Diego is influencing every level of research, innovation, and development in the field. Additionally, with San Diego’s world class education institutions we are able to create an environment where we are not only educating qualified students here in the region but providing them the access they need to learn about local opportunities.

Fixing our Broken Immigration System

I joined with Congressman Joaquin Castro to lead 71 of our colleagues in asking President Obama to take concrete actions to fix our broken visa system in a way that boosts our economy and helps keep those who are educated in American universities here so that they can start their innovative ventures in the US. Under the current, broken system, over 200,000 applications from people who qualify for visas have been delayed due to bureaucratic error. That has unnecessarily hampered our economic growth and made it more difficult for entrepreneurs to keep the talented individuals they need to grow their businesses here at home.

United States Trade Representative Visits San Diego

Last month I brought the United States Trade Representative Ambassador Froman to San Diego to hear directly from our local businesses and workers about what the Federal government can do to help them grow and better compete in the international marketplace. The more we encourage exporting of San Diego-made products and technology, the more jobs we can create for San Diegans. We toured Solar Turbines, which exports products across the world every day, and Ballast Point Brewery, a local craft brewery helping make San Diego an internationally known craft beer hub.

Senior Whip

Last week I was honored to be asked by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer to serve as a Senior Whip. Senior Whips are responsible for working with fellow Members to develop strategy and consensus about upcoming legislation that will be considered in the House. This new role will increase my ability to advocate for San Diego’s priorities and showcase our region as being at the forefront of innovation and growth. I will continue to fight for forward-looking policies that create high-quality jobs for all seeking the American dream, such as owning a home, educating their children, and saving for retirement.
