News from Representative Luria

Dear Friend,

With Congress back in legislative session, I am pleased to report that my bill to make VA websites accessible for all veterans passed the House. Here's a recap of my work for our district:

Getting Results for Our Veterans

On Tuesday, the House passed my bill to make health care more accessible to veterans with disabilities. The VA Website Accessibility Act would direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to conduct a study and submit a plan to Congress that would make VA websites accessible and understandable for veterans affected by blindness or hearing loss.

Our servicemembers put themselves in harm’s way to protect American freedom. It is only right that Congress uphold our end of the promise by giving disabled veterans the care they earned. I’m grateful the House has advanced my effort to eliminate barriers preventing some of our bravest men and women from receiving quality medical care, as well as disability, vocational, and educational benefits.

Leading Efforts to Protect Our Chesapeake Bay

Last week, I met with my office’s Chesapeake Bay Advisory Board to inform our region’s stakeholders about my legislative efforts to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Last month, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passed my bill - Chesapeake Bay Program Reauthorization Act - and recommended it for a vote in the full House of Representatives.

We also discussed how I advocated for the House passage of $110 million in funding for important environmental priorities. This funding included $85 million for the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program.

The Chesapeake Bay is an invaluable economic, environmental, and recreational resource that we must keep clean and thriving for future generations. I will continue to lead bipartisan efforts to preserve and protect this national treasure.

Standing By Our Allies

After the President decided to withdraw U.S. forces from the Syria-Turkey border and abandoned our Kurdish partners in the process, I demanded clarification on the President’s strategy.

As Turkish forces conducted an offensive military campaign into northeastern Syria, I joined over 50 fellow lawmakers in asking for answers. Together, we wrote a letter with 10 detailed questions about the administration’s plans going forward. We stressed that the U.S. has a national security and moral responsibility to maintain a presence in Northern Syria and support our Kurdish Syrian Democratic allies.

The President’s decision betrays the trust of the United States and undermines the security of our faithful Kurdish allies. In real time, the President is degrading America’s ability to respond to resurgent ISIS actions and future regional threats in the Middle East.

ImageOn a lovely Thursday afternoon, I toured Colonial National Historial Park on the Peninsula and met with National Park Service leadership. This beautiful park has a rich history and offers therapeutic benefits to all. We’re so lucky to have it in our community!

ImageI enjoyed meeting Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3160 in Oceanview. I thank them for their service and I am honored to advocate for them in Congress.
