News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

For me this week started with a heavy heart. I want to start off by expressing my sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Deputy Steven Sandberg who was killed last Sunday in St. Cloud. Deputy Sandberg’s death was both senseless and tragic.

Our community has suffered a major loss and we will never forget what this exceptional man has done for us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Steven’s wife Kristi and daughter Cassie, as well as his many friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

To honor Deputy Sandberg’s life and service to our community, I paid tribute to him on the House Floor earlier this week. Watch the clip here.

Supporting Our Heroes

Earlier in the week I had the opportunity to visit the Avon Fire Department, the St. Cloud Fire and Police Departments as well as the chance to participate in the Lake Region Firefighters Association Annual meeting.

In light of recent events, I think it is especially important to recognize the incredible work that these men and women do. I plan to continue to make my support for these brave individuals known, and I hope you do too.

Town hall Time

Back in January, I promised to hold an in-person town hall in every county throughout Minnesota’s Sixth District. November’s town hall in Wright County will mark my 13th town hall total and my 7th and final county in the Sixth Congressional District. I am really looking forward to this event, and hope to see Minnesotans from my home county and from across the district.

Politicians vs. Press

This week I participated in the National Press Club Spelling Bee which pitted journalists against politicians. The competition was fierce as some of Capitol Hill’s best and brightest came together to out-spell one another. Even though I did not win the spelling bee, I was excited that my friend and fellow Congressman, Don Beyer took home the first place prize.

I am also proud to say that I was the last Republican standing and runner-up among members of Congress. Better luck next year.

Capturing Minnesota’s Beauty

As October comes to a end, the due date for my photo contest draws to a close. In case you missed it, at the beginning of October I introduced a new contest that aims to recognize the natural beauty that Minnesota has to offer. There is still time to enter the contest, so I invite those of you from my district to submit a high quality photo you have taken highlighting the beautiful scenery in Minnesota’s Sixth District.

Please submit all photos to with your full name and where the photo was taken included in the email. The winning photo will be used as the cover photo on both my Facebook and Twitter. A couple things to be aware of:

  1. The photo must be submitted by the person who took the photo
  2. By submitting a photo, you are giving my office permission to use the photo on our social media

If you enjoy my weekly newsletter, and want to become even more connected, make sure to follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

I hope you and your family have an enjoyable weekend, and thank you for reading!
