News from Representative Sánchez

Dear Neighbor,

In response to the global outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), I want to take moment to share information to help you stay safe and healthy.

As of yesterday, March 2, 2020, there have been at least 43 cases of COVID-19 reported in California. In Congress, I am working with my colleagues on a smart, strong, and strategic response. This includes ensuring the government has the resources needed to combat this disease and keep our community safe. That is why the House will soon advance emergency funding to address this public health crisis.

In the meantime, it's important to know the symptoms and how to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases.

Symptoms

For confirmed COVID-19 cases, reported illnesses have ranged from mild to severe symptoms, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure.

Prevention

According to the CDC, there is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask (facemasks are only needed for those who show symptoms of coronavirus).
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

Sincerely,

Linda T. Sánchez
Member of Congress
