News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

Fall is right around the corner and Congress is officially back in the swing of things. This week was especially busy as I spent half of the week working in Minnesota and the other half working in Washington.

I had the opportunity to speak at a Hunting Works for Minnesota event, with the Minnesota Precision Manufacturing Association and the Association of Corporate Growth. I also had a week full of agriculture meetings and met with the Minnesota Pork Producers, the Minnesota Farm Bureau and the National Farmer Unions. Additionally, I attended several Financial Services Committee Hearings where I questioned experts on the downfalls of Dodd-Frank.

But a major focus of this week was on Planned Parenthood and protecting the unborn.

Defund Planned Parenthood

Recently a series of horrifying videos were released featuring Planned Parenthood officials admitting to the sale of body parts for profit. In response to these videos, several bills were introduced including the Defund Planned Parenthood Act that I cosponsored and which we passed in the House today.

I have been, and will always be, pro-life. As the father of seven wonderful children, it fills my heart with grief to think of the millions of children who will never get to experience the beauty of life.

Planned Parenthood must be held accountable for their reprehensible actions. This is why today, I voted to defund Planned Parenthood and transfer the funds to more than 13,000 clinics nationwide that provide health services for women - without conducting abortions. This actually results in an expansion of women’s access to health care.

Hunting, A Great Minnesota Pastime

I grew up hunting, and have spent many hours with my father, brother and children in Minnesota woods and fields during hunting season. This week I had the opportunity to speak with an organization aimed at promoting the importance of hunting and shooting sports to Minnesota’s economy and heritage. I even got to test out my shooting abilities with Congressman Walz (MN-01). It became clear that I may have some work to do to practice before next year’s shoot.

Our Veterans Deserve a Reliable and Transparent VA

Yesterday, I signed on as an original cosponsor of the VA Billing Accountability Act which was introduced by my Minnesota colleague, Rep. Kline (MN-02). This bill is in response to the nearly 1,500 veterans from Minnesota and Wisconsin who were notified by their local VA that they had unbilled co-payments from as far back as five years. This is simply unacceptable.

This legislation sets forth specific and immediate requirements which would ensure that this never happens again. Our nation’s heroes deserve quality care without struggling due to delays or errors made by an institution created for the sole purpose of helping them.

Thank you for reading my newsletter. I wish you and your loved ones an enjoyable weekend!
