Happy Friday Once Again –

We’ve made it to the end of a busy week in Congress. On Tuesday, we welcomed President Trump to the House of Representatives for the 2019 State of the Union address. I attended the address and appreciated what I heard from the President that night.

Invitation to the State of the Union

Each Member of Congress is afforded the opportunity to invite a guest to the State of the Union. I invited my friend and Border Patrol agent Art Del Cueto. Since he joined the Border Patrol in 2003, Art has dedicated his life to enforcing our immigration laws and protecting Americans. I’ve had the privilege of touring our porous border with Art on several occasions over the past few years and I am grateful for his knowledge and his leadership within the Border Patrol.

Build the Wall

On the day of the State of the Union, I wrote an op-ed for the Washington Examiner previewing the upcoming address. I encouraged President Trump to announce that very night that he would begin building the wall by using his lawful authority delegated to him by Congress in Title 10 of the U.S. Code. He may not have announced that specific action that night, but I am pleased that he remains committed to securing our border.

Greeting the President

I was one of the first members inside the House chamber Tuesday evening to claim one of the coveted aisle seats. I greeted the President when he entered, and I congratulated him as he left.

My Statement

After the address, I released a statement to react to the President’s speech. Here is a portion:

I hope all of my colleagues will put American success and security above partisan politics. We can – and we must – commit tonight to a fresh start to continue to show the world that the United States will lead by example with our policies and our vision for the future.”

Post-SOTU Reaction

The Capitol is the place to be for post State of the Union reaction. I met my guest, Art Del Cueto, in National Statutory Hall to join Trish Regan on Fox Business to react to what we had just heard from the President.

The End of the Night

After a couple more local and national television appearances in the Capitol, Art and I made our way back to my office. We talked to a couple more local reporters about the address and then talked amongst ourselves about how the President’s intended policies will impact illegal immigration and border security.

In Conclusion

President Trump delivered a terrific speech, and his remarks resonated with countless Americans in every corner of the nation. I look forward to working with the President and with my colleagues – on both sides of the aisle – to accomplish great things for the American people. It is an honor to represent this district in the United States House of Representatives. Until next week –
