News from Representative Waltz

Dear Friend,

Thank you for reading my newsletter! My team and I continue to work for you and our community. It was a very eventful week in Washington and I'm excited to tell you about what we accomplished. Here are some highlights:

PROTECTING OUR ELECTIONS: On Thursday, the FBI announced a new policy committed to informing state officials of local election systems breaches. As many of you may recall, two Florida counties' elections systems were infiltrated by Russians in 2016. Four years later, voters in those counties still don't know that their data had been accessed. Thursday's announcement follows legislation I introduced with Rep. Stephanie Murphy last year requiring the Department of Homeland Security to notify state and local officials, certain Members of Congress and potentially affected voters when an election system breach. While I'm glad the FBI is changing its policy, I will continue to ensure voters are informed when elections systems are breached. Our elections system is the most critical piece of infrastructure to preserve our republic, so it is vital that we do all we can to promote transparency and protect our elections.
WORKING WITH ISRAEL TO TREAT PTSD: Serving in combat changes you – and many times, adjusting to civilian life again can be difficult. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) doesn't discriminate. It affects veterans from all different backgrounds and nationalities. Israel and the U.S. are strong allies on the battlefield and should work together to care for our veterans when they return home. To ensure our veterans lead happy, healthy lives, we must also be allies in veteran's health. That's why my colleagues Rep. Elaine Luria Rep., Chrissy Houlahan and Rep. Lee Zeldin and I introduced legislation to leverage our partnership in combat with Israel for research, diagnosis and treatment of PTSD. Together we can work to ensure our veterans lead the happy, healthy lives.
DETERRING CHINESE INFLUENCE: Right now, we are engaged in a cold war with China – and China has been in one with us for a while. It's time for us to wake up and realize we can't just sit back as China oversteps and intrudes on the political and economic structures of countries all over the world. We must mobilize our allies against China to finally put the pressure needed on China's authoritarian regime to deter President Xi's plans for global domination now and in the future. On Wednesday, I spoke during the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) hearing on the Department of Defense's role in competing with China.

HELPING PUERTO RICO: As you may know, Puerto Rico has been hit by hundreds of earthquakes since the end of December. The destruction has devastated our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico and they need help to rebuild and recover. Last week, I sent a letter along with my colleagues from Puerto Rico and fellow Floridians in Congress colleagues to President Trump asking to sign a major disaster declaration for Puerto Rico. A disaster declaration would authorize federal aid to help the island recover from these earthquakes. On Thursday, President Trump signed the Major Disaster Declaration for Puerto Rico, which will allow for debris removal and public safety. In Congress, we’re doing all we can do help but please continue to keep the people of Puerto Rico in your thoughts and prayers as they recover.
