News from Representative Sánchez

   

Dear Friend,

On Independence Day, we celebrate the birth of the United States—a sovereign country, established by and for the people.

In the Declaration of Independence, our founders declared, "...that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." While we have not always lived up to these values, what truly makes our country great is our desire to work towards that belief in our shared equality and humanity. We demand it from our elected officials, we hope to see it from neighbors, and we strive to live it ourselves.

Unfortunately, the horrible images and stories recently from border facilities in Texas are a painful reminder that sometimes we fail. In witnessing how cruel and broken our immigration system is, particularly on our nation's birthday, we must strive harder to live our founding values. This means protecting the humanity and dignity of all people, including those coming to our border precisely because they too believe in those values.

In Washington, I will never stop fighting for greater equality for all those who call—and want to call—the United States home. Families deserve a fair tax code, access to affordable housing, an opportunity to claim asylum, and an immigration system that keeps families together. This is only possible when we have a government that works for the people.

This Fourth of July, join me as we reflect on our founding, in working towards a more perfect union and treating our neighbors and all people with dignity and respect.
