News from Representative Waltz

Dear Friend,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful and blessed holiday. As 2020 begins, my team and I continue to work for you and our community. We accomplished a lot this week and I'm excited to tell you all about it. Here are some highlights:

  • President Trump and his administration stood up against Iran and the continued attack on American lives
  • I spoke on the House floor commending our military and intelligence community for taking out known terrorist Qasem Soleimani to protect Americans
  • Amazon is coming to Deltona, bringing jobs and economic growth to our community
  • Our new U.S. Space Force successfully completed its first successful launch in Cape Canaveral

CONTINUING PRESSURE ON IRAN: On Tuesday, Iraqi military bases housing American troops and our allies were attacked by Iranian missiles in retaliation for the death of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Soleimani was responsible for promoting terrorism in the Middle East and for killing hundreds of American soldiers. I'm glad President Trump finally stood up to Iran to show them we will not allow the death of more Americans. We must continue to enforce sanctions and economic the pressure campaign because it's working — but we can't do it alone. Our European allies need to step up against terrorism to pressure the regime back to the negotiating table. For our country, our military and the world, it's important we don't back down.

VOTING AGAINST THE WAR POWERS ACT: After hearing the intelligence briefing presented to the House on Wednesday, I believe it was the right move by President Trump to save American lives and protect our country and the world. On Thursday, I voted NO on the Reclamation of War Powers Act in Congress. I believe President Trump did the right thing. President Trump finally took out a monster that previous administrations didn't bring to justice. We should be supporting our President, not hindering his presidential power. The last thing I want to do is make our Commander-in-Chief come back to this broken Congress to authorize action against another terrorist threatening more American lives.

PROMOTING ECONOMIC GROWTH IN OUR COMMUNITY: Amazon is coming to Deltona! Amazon has announced plans to build a distribution center in Deltona by November 2020, which will bring 500 jobs to our community. Flagler and Volusia County already have the nation's third-highest percentage of employers adding jobs to start this new year, so this is great news. Amazon's new distribution center is a big win and I'm excited to see what the benefits this amazing opportunity brings to our area.

MAKING HISTORY WITH SPACE FORCE'S FIRST LAUNCH: Our new U.S. Space Force launched its first rocket, the SpaceX Falcon 9, from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Monday. Our critical assets, intelligence, navigation and banking are held in space. Right now, foreign actors, including Russia and China, are spending billions to build up their space technology and capabilities to threaten our national security. Investing in our Space Force is critical if we want to continue to protect our country. It was amazing to see the Space Force's historic first launch. Let's continue to make history and protect America in space!
