Dear San Franciscan,

In my view, the House Republican Leadership is racing forward with a tax scam that will raise taxes on millions of middle class families, in order to hand deficit-exploding giveaways to the wealthiest and corporations shipping jobs overseas. 

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi joined Congresswoman Barbara Lee and their constituents at San Francisco Fire Station 4 to discuss the negative impacts of the tax proposal, specifically the elimination of crucial tax deductions. 

While the tax scam gives staggering tax breaks to the wealthiest and corporate America, key tax benefits are destroyed for middle class California families, including:

• Dismantling the State and Local Tax Deduction – imposing an unfair double tax on middle class families, driving down home values, and endangering local governments’ ability to fund law enforcement, schools and health services.  
• Eliminates Student Loan Interest Deduction & Lifetime Learning Credits – destroying a key deduction for young graduates and workers getting the job training they need to succeed in the 21^st century economy, while preserving special giveaways for the wealthiest. 
• Eliminates Medical Expense Deduction – destroying a critical deduction that helps families with children with disabilities, long-term care needs, and high dental expenses. 
• Imposes New Limit on Mortgage Interest Deduction – assaulting the dream of middle class homeownership in communities.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi held a press conference to discuss the effect of the elimination of the state and local tax deduction in California.

California has the most to lose in this partisan tax bill, especially through dismantling the state and local tax deduction that millions of families across our state have come to rely on. According to the IRS, more than 6 million Californian households claim the state and local tax deduction - an average of more than $18,000. Overall, the non-partisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy shows that 2,248,000 middle class households in California earning under $109,160 will see a tax hike averaging $1,240.

Every day, we learn more about the devastating tax hikes hidden in the tax bill targeting students, teachers, seniors, people with long-term care needs, and middle class families. In my opinion, once again, the House Republican Leadership is moving forward with policies that will force massive changes into law before the American people see it’s just another trillion dollar tax cut to the wealthiest and corporations, at the expense of working Americans.
