District Update |September 15, 2019

Dear Friend,

We had a busy first week back in Washington, D.C. I would like to take the chance to update you on the work we did this week.

Remembering 9/11

We reflected on 9/11 this week by remembering the moment our nation stood still 18 years ago. We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the fearlessness of our nation's first responders, and the countless number of families and friends who lost their loved ones.

Numerous Arizona families suffered from the terrorist attacks on 9/11. One Arizonan, Gary Bird, was in the North Tower the day of the attack. The 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund is currently aiding 41 survivors in Arizona with their health issues from that day.

I joined Representative Maloney before my floor speech on the economy to remember September 11, 2001. To watch us speaking together on the House Floor, click here

Where is the Joy?

Each month, we have received exceptional jobs reports. We have seen record unemployment, a strong labor force, and individuals coming out of the wood works becoming employed. I unpacked our recent August jobs report in a floor speech - and the data we received is record breaking.

We have:

     ✔️163.4 Million people working
     ✔️63.3% Labor force participation
✔️3.3% Unemployment for Adult Women - lowest rate since 1953
✔️5.5% Unemployment for African Americans - a record low
✔️4.2% Unemployment for Hispanic Americans - tying a record low
✔️2.8% Unemployment for Asian Americans - near a record low

There is so much positive news for our economy to be heard, yet we are so focused on partisanship that it has left us to forget about the joy. Click the photo above to watch my recent floor speech as I walk through the importance of continuing on this path of economic success and what these job reports break down to.

National Congress of American Indians

I joined the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) at the Capitol for their Tribal Unity Impact Day to discuss how Congress is working for tribal communities and what we can be doing to ensure we are supporting new technologies on our tribal lands.

Thank you, NCAI, for inviting me to come speak to this group each year. Ensuring our office is being helpful to our tribal communities is a high priority for me while serving in Congress.

Arizona Animal Shelter Euthanasia Down

Great news this week for Phoenix animal shelters: "According to a study conducted by the New York Times, the rate of dogs and cats being euthanized at shelters in Phoenix fell from 46% in 2012 to 4% in 2018."

Department of Homeland Security Inspector General

I met with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General Dr. Joseph Cuffari to discuss his new role at DHS. Dr. Cuffari has worked in the Arizona government for multiple years prior to being nominated for this position and it was great to meet with him.

We are fortunate to have an Arizonan serving in this position, and I look forward to working with Dr. Cuffari to ensure our homeland is kept safe.

It's Time to Pass the USMCA

I joined my colleagues on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) Whip Team for a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to discuss the status of this modernized trade agreement that will help further strengthen our economy.

We are hopeful this trade agreement will be passed in September or October. Arizona knows the importance of trade with our neighbors, which this agreement will only further strengthen. I will continue to support passage of this agreement and I hope to see it done this Fall.

I spoke on the House Floor about the benefits of the USMCA with my colleagues. To watch my speech, click here

Passport Awareness

September is Passport Awareness Month. During Fall and Winter months demand is down for passport applications. If you are planning a trip abroad for the Spring or Summer months you can avoid expedite fees and take advantage of faster processing times. You can apply here to be ahead of the curve!
