LOCAL HEROES

Earlier this week, first responders from South Texas were called by state officials to aid communities that were hit by Hurricane Laura.  As part of the Texas Task Force 1, crews from the 34th District of Texas were deployed to Beaumont, Texas to assist with preparations and relief from the storm.

I join the community in wishing them well and hope they are able to return home to their families soon. I am proud to be able to represent such brave men and women who have reported for duty and selflessly offered their services to help fellow Texans. We thank you for your service!

THE LEGISLATIVE ROUNDUP

DEFENDING THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE

Last week, I was proud to support H.R. 8015 The Delivering for America Act, legislation that protects and upholds the vital services the post office provides to millions of individuals. Americans and countless small businesses rely on the USPS to securely deliver medicine, food, packages, paychecks, tax refunds, and election ballots in a timely manner. When the founding fathers crafted the U.S. Constitution, they intentionally placed language empowering Congress to establish the United States Postal Service. I will continue working with my colleagues to protect the USPS and ensure that every residential and business address in the United States continues to benefit from the affordable, reliable, and universal mail delivery service that USPS provides.

HELPING MODERNIZE OUR NATION’S TAX FILING PROCESS

Last week I introduced H.R. 8063 and H.R. 8062, two pieces of legislation integral for modernizing the tax filing process. Currently, when filing your taxes electronically, you do not receive an electronic filing receipt. Under H.R. 8062, the outdated Internal Revenue Code of 1986 will be amended to provide electronic filing receipts to taxpayers who file via the electronic filing process and will provide you additional time to resolve your tax return if the IRS rejects it. Under current law, when taxpayers enter an installation agreement to pay off their taxes they must pay an upfront fee.  H.R. 8063 will eliminate those upfront costs making it more financially manageable for taxpayers to pay off their taxes.  I am proud to introduce these pieces of legislation that will benefit the taxpayer and bring our tax code into the 21st Century.

HONORING TEJANO MUSIC LEGENDS

I introduced H.Con.Res.113, a resolution to honor and celebrate the achievements of Tejano music artists such as Freddy Fender, Roberto Pulido, Flaco Jiménez and Selena Quintanilla. Tejano music has been the musical backbone of Texas and its culture since the early 20th century. Through their timeless music, Freddy Fender, Roberto Pulido, Flaco Jiménez, and Selena Quintanilla paved the way for Tejano and Latino stars throughout the United States. Their legacy continues to share with the world the richness and strength of South Texas culture and heritage, spanning borders and language barriers. This resolution honors their contributions to the cultural heritage and diversity of this great country and its people.

HAVE YOU COMPLETED THE 2020 CENSUS?

As you may know, the Census has made some alterations to their timeline. Currently, the LAST DAY to complete your 2020 Census is September 30. An undercount in the 2020 Census will negatively impact our community by limiting our access to vital resources for the next 10 years. The Census dictates federal funding for economic development, childcare, schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and many other vital services. If you have not done so, I encourage you to take 10 minutes to self-respond today. You can respond online, by mail, or by phone

Currently only 47.5% of TX34 has completed their 2020 Census.

We need everyone to be counted to ensure we get the resources and funding our region deserves. Please fill out your Census today.
