District Update |August 18, 2019

Dear Friend,

We have had a great time recognizing so many people and businesses in our community these last few weeks. Each week, we have learned more about how special the AZ-06 community is, and we hope to find more ways to recognize the compassion and hard work individuals and businesses are doing to best serve others.

If you had not done so, please use this link to submit a Congressional Recognition for us to honor a community leader in AZ-06. I appreciate you taking the time to help recognize others in the community. Now I would like to update you on some of the work I've been doing in Arizona this past week.

Prisoner of War Medal

We honored Eugene Metcalf, a Fountain Hills resident, with a Prisoner of War Medal this week. Mr. Metcalf joined the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne, 508th, 501 Paratroop Infantry Regiment in 1942.  He was among the first to jump from a C-47 over Groesbeek Heights, about 45 miles behind enemy lines. He was listed as Killed In Action (KIA) and left for dead by his patrol unit. He also lost his hearing when an explosion damaged his eardrum and held as a POW for 8 months.

During his captivity, he was interrogated by Heindrich Himmler, the 2nd most powerful Nazi under the Third Reich.  He had made a failed attempt to escape the camp, but was re-captured in the vicinity of the Swiss mountains.  The POW camp he was held at was later liberated by U.S. troops in April 1945.  His story is chronicled in a book by Marcus Nannini, called: Left for Dead at Nijmegen: The True Story of an American Paratrooper.

It was truly an honor to meet Mr. Metcalf and give him this award. Thank you for your unforgettable service to our country.

After Tax Reform - Revenues Have Grown

The U.S. Treasury released new data for July 2019 receipts and we are continuing to see positive economic growth. In December 2017, when we passed tax reform, economists predicted our receipts would be far from our past data. The chart above shows that we are still seeing growth in our Treasury's tax receipts without overtaxing American's hard earned work.

The data above is from Fiscal Years 2017, 2018, and 2019 for October to July. I look forward to continuing to track each month of U.S. Treasury receipts and see how pro-growth policies can provide positive results.

Perfect Attendance at Whispering Wind Academy

The 2019-2020 school year has successfully kicked off! I joined students at Whispering Wind Academy in Paradise Valley to present 'Perfect Attendance Certificates' to students who didn't miss a day at school last year. I am challenging each of the students in AZ-06 to work towards perfect attendance this  school year so I can come back with even more certificates.

A special thank you to all of the incredible Arizona teachers for your hard work to ensure Arizona students continue their success in education as they start in their new classrooms this school year.
