Weekly Newsletter

This was a big week in the State as we continue our efforts to return to normalcy while taking measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Nevada residents have done such a wonderful job with social distancing, wearing masks, and being diligent about slowing the spread that we were able to adjust mitigation standards in a few areas. This resulted in the increase in the size of gatherings of various types, including places of worship and conventions. We were also able to allow for minimal- and non-contact youth and adult sports to resume practice, training, and competitions. This is a big and positive step forward, and it’s a result of all of the hard work that everyone has collectively done while dealing with the pandemic. The only way we protect our economy and remain open is to continue to adhering to the basic principles of the social distancing, facial coverings and good hygiene.

This week was also one of solemn remembrance as we celebrated “Vegas Strong Day” and honored those that lost their live as a result of the 1 October shooting. We also recognized the first responders, law enforcement officers, faith-based organizations, counselors and volunteers who provided support during and after the heinous attack. Although a difficult day for the State and specifically the City of Las Vegas, it is a reminder of the love and support felt not only during our time of recovery, but that is still felt throughout the community even today.

We have another informative week ahead, with the COVID-19 Task Force reconvening and working with experts in State government to continuously evaluate the virus' impact in our community and the ongoing response in Nevada. I am and always will remain committed to the health and safety of Nevadans and the sustained recovery of our economy. We will keep moving forward and get through this together.

- Governor Steve Sisolak

This week I held two press conference announcing the issuance of Emergency Directives adjusting the COVID-19 Statewide Baseline Mitigation Standards and lifting restrictions on youth and adult recreational sports.

The update to the COVID-19 Statewide Baseline Mitigation Standards is an important step towards allowing more Nevadans to safely participate in social gatherings, including those facilitated by our faith-based communities. Additionally, this will allow Nevada to continue on the responsible path of economic reopening and recovery. With this next step comes great responsibility for our residents, business owners, workers, and families. I'm confident Nevada will rise to this challenge to ensure we follow all mitigation measures and guidance to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect our economy.

Additionally, the Emergency Directive and accompanying guidance on youth and adult sports will allow for practice, training and competitions for non-contact and minimal-contact sports statewide for both youth and adult sports. Sports leagues must first submit a Preparedness & Safety Plan and comply with all health and safety protocols outlined in the guidance, including strict adherence to social distancing, sanitization and capacity limitations on spectators at sporting events.

This Thursday, it was an honor to speak the 1 October remembrance ceremony at the Government Center in a sunrise ceremony and at the LVMPD's Reality Based Training Center on the 3rd anniversary of this tragedy. I know for many, this was a difficult day, filled with mourning.

Kathy and I are holding all the family members and loved ones close in our hearts and in honor of the 3rd anniversary, I issued a proclamation for Vegas Strong Day 2020. We remember the lives lost, the many injured, and reflect on the bravery & resiliency of our community as we heal from such an evil act of violence.

This Tuesday, I was pleased to join United Healthcare and Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada for a special donation event. This donation will help fund two integral programs: Meals on Wheels and Renewing Hope for Men. These long-term, sustained assistance programs are so vital to the Nevada community.

Congratulations, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada!

Boards & Commissions

Boards and Commissions are created to provide citizens a voice in their government and influence decisions that shape the quality of life for the residents of the Silver State. Members are responsible for advising the Governor, the Legislature and state agencies. Serving on a board or commission is a privilege and one of the most effective ways citizens can take in becoming an active voice in state government. Governor Sisolak is devoted to appointing qualified and responsible candidates that want to make a positive impact for all in the State of Nevada.

WHAT ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS?

The Governor makes appointments to three types of boards and commissions:

  • Advisory - An advisory board, commission or council serves as a formal liaison between a state agency and the public, in addition to making recommendations on how to address specific issues.
  • Regulatory Board - Regulatory boards are those that oversee the licensing, handle complaints, and enforce disciplinary actions of individuals or industries that fall within the jurisdiction of the board’s authority.
  • Task Force - A task force is created for the purpose of accomplishing a definite objective and goal.
