Weekly Newsletter

This week was filled with many celebrations for Nevada - from the opening of a new Nevada National Guard Facility in North Las Vegas, to speaking at the State of the College with Nevada State and a beam signing celebration for Opportunity Village. These celebrations are a reminder that while we continue to deal with the ongoing pandemic, we can still find ways to come together - virtually and in small, socially distanced groups.

As mentioned last week, I have tasked experts in State government representing business, enforcement and public health to conduct a deep dive evaluation of current COVID-19 statewide standards and restrictions. I also joined faith leaders and business/industry experts from across the state to hear from them, seek their guidance and get input on how we best move forward. As always, I am humbled and inspired by their commitment to our communities and safety.

Next week, I plan to announce updates to the COVID-19 statewide standards that will include adjustments to the current capacity limit for gatherings, lifting certain restrictions on youth sports, and more -- all in a safe and responsible manner. My Office will be sending out information on the date and time of the press conference early next week. Make sure to tune in!

- Governor Steve Sisolak

Congratulations to Ms. Juliana Urtubey, the 2020 Nevada State Teacher of the Year!

I was thrilled to join Superintendent Jhone Ebert, Assemblyman Howard Watts, CCSD and others to honor the 2021 Nevada State Teacher of the Year Ms. Juliana Urtubey, a special education teacher at Booker Senior Innovative Elementary School. Her unwavering belief that students are capable of amazing things is just one reason why she was chosen to be honored today. I know she will be an outstanding candidate to represent Nevada in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

I want to thank all our educators for being adaptable and innovative in the face of the challenges presented by #COVID19. Our communities need your leadership more than ever. We are counting on you and here to support you.

This week we celebrated Climate Week, recognizing that climate change impacts everyone, everywhere. I want to thank the U.S. Climate Alliance for hosting this year’s Governor’s panel, where I joined California Governor Gavin Newsom, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont for a robust discussion of how we can all work together to advance coordinated climate action from coast to coast.

Congratulations, Opportunity Village!

Opportunity Village is an organization near and dear to my heart. I was able to attend a beam signing ceremony this week for their residential housing project, Betty’s Village, which is set to open next year. I can’t wait to return for the grand opening of this inclusive community of people with diverse abilities.

Boards & Commissions

Boards and Commissions are created to provide citizens a voice in their government and influence decisions that shape the quality of life for the residents of the Silver State. Members are responsible for advising the Governor, the Legislature and state agencies. Serving on a board or commission is a privilege and one of the most effective ways citizens can take in becoming an active voice in state government. Governor Sisolak is devoted to appointing qualified and responsible candidates that want to make a positive impact for all in the State of Nevada.

WHAT ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS?

The Governor makes appointments to three types of boards and commissions:

  • Advisory- An advisory board, commission or council serves as a formal liaison between a state agency and the public, in addition to making recommendations on how to address specific issues.
  • Regulatory Board- Regulatory boards are those that oversee the licensing, handle complaints, and enforce disciplinary actions of individuals or industries that fall within the jurisdiction of the board’s authority.
  • Task Force - A task force is created for the purpose of accomplishing a definite objective and goal.
