Dear Friend,

Thank you for signing-up for the Comstock Connection.  This Summer has been very busy for us.  Below you will see what we have done legislatively as well as the meetings we have had on Capitol Hill and our travels throughout the District.  Stay tuned for more information in our next newsletter about our August District Work Period, in addition to a special update on the Iran deal that Congress will take up in September.  As always, it is an honor to serve the 10th District of Virginia.

Beware of IRS Scam
Please be aware that the IRS has reported a scam circulating in our area.  If you receive a call from people purporting to be IRS agents saying they are taking action against you, be careful and do not give them any personal information.  Click here to report them to the authorities.

Legislative Priorities
21st Century Cures Act
I recently voted for the 21st Century Cures Act which presents a national vision and major opportunity to advance better detections, management, and cures of chronic diseases, as well as to improve the quality of life for our fellow Americans.  Investment in 21st Century Cures provides our country the ability to get new lifesaving treatments to those who need them.  I was glad to cosponsor this bill.

Federally funded medical research is vital in order to gain a better understanding of diseases, develop early detection tools, and find more effective treatments and cures.  A treatment that delays the onset of Alzheimer's by just 5 years is projected to decrease the total costs of the disease by 1/3, or $367 billion by 2050.  I thank my colleagues for supporting this bill.

OPM Cyberattack
We must move forward from the recent OPM cyberattack and make sure that another disastrous breach never happens again.  We need more information as to how this happened, why this happened, and how we can ensure that our personal information is protected.  Recently, we held a tele-townhall to talk about the issue and how we can help if personal information has already been compromised.  As Chairwoman of the Research and Technology Subcommittee on the Space, Science and Technology Committee, I held a hearing on the data breach and we will continue to look at the different ways experts and private businesses can work with the federal government to develop new technologies to combat this constantly growing threat.  Cyber security must be a top priority.  For more information, please contact my office.

Medical Device Tax Repeal
I voted to repeal the Obamacare medical device tax.  This tax was originally implemented to help cover the immense costs of the so-called "Affordable" Care Act, but it became a burden to innovation, inhibiting research on products that improve quality of life.  Repealing this tax will lead to an increase in the development of cutting-edge technologies that create high-paying jobs here at home while saving lives all over the world.  The bill now awaits action in the Senate and approval by the President.

Veterans ID Card Act
I cosponsored and voted to support H.R. 91, The Veterans ID Card Act, which passed the House unanimously and was signed into law on July 20th.  Previously, veterans had experienced difficulties documenting their service.    Now, veterans who have served their country with honor will have an official ID card that will allow them to easily prove their service and access the benefits afforded to them.

Enforce The Law For Sanctuary Cities Act
I voted in support of H.R. 3009 -- the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act which passed by a strong vote of 241-179. This bipartisan legislation seeks to ensure that state and local governments enforce our immigration laws and do not provide sanctuary or safe harbor for illegal immigrants. The legislation deems noncompliant cities ineligible for certain federal grants.  Our immigration system is broken, but we must enforce the laws on the books while bolstering border security and interior enforcement.  Local governments must enforce the rule of law and must not be rewarded with taxpayer money when they choose to ignore federal policy.  We cannot have another sad and horrifying story like that of Kate Steinle, an innocent woman who was killed as the result of our broken immigration system.

Working Lunch With Kim Moo-sung
We had a working lunch with South Korea's ruling Saenuri Party Chairman Kim Moo-sung at the U.S. Capitol.  It is such an honor to have a large Korean community in Virginia's 10th Congressional District. and we continue to work together on the issues that affect them in our community.  I always look forward to going to the Korean Bell Garden Ceremony every spring and I am especially looking forward to attending the 13th Annual Korus Festival in September.

Meeting With Sheryl Sandberg
We got to spend some time with Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg, who visited with the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus.  This year is the first year there are more than 100 women in Congress.  Sheryl Sandberg's book, 'Lean In", inspired me to create the Young Women Leadership Program while I was a Delegate in the Virginia State House, a program that I have now brought to Capitol Hill.

We toured The Easter Seals Child Development Center of Northern Virginia, which serves up to 162 children, including children with disabilities and special needs and children of Wounded Warriors.  We met with Lisa Reeves, President and CEO, and her team.  They do great work with all the children at the center, especially those of Wounded Warriors who are at Walter Reed.

Superior Paving
It was great to meet David White and the employees at Superior Paving in Centreville.  As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in Congress, I am working with my colleagues on a long-range highway bill so businesses in the District like Superior Paving can plan for the future on a long-term basis.

10th Congressional District Young Women Leadership Program
We started our 10th Congressional District Young Women Leadership Program this Summer after having conducted a similar program for young women for two years in the Virginia State Legislature.  This leadership program provides young women in middle school and high school the opportunity to meet and interact with women in leadership positions in government, technology, philanthropy and business.  Each participant learns about different career opportunities in various fields, the legislative process, develops their leadership skills, identifies their strengths and interests, and practices effective communication.  My hope is that these opportunities help inspire the next generation of women leaders.  So far we have had program events on Capitol Hill, in Great Falls, in Winchester and in Ashburn.  We have discussed human trafficking, leadership, technology, business, and how to take advantage of the opportunities available in our community.  The young women involved have learned a great deal so far and I know they will take the lessons they have learned to heart and grow into strong, successful leaders.  If you would like to learn more about the 10th Congressional District Young Women Leadership Program, please give us a call.

Special Note: Public Forum On Heroin
In conjunction with Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman, we will host a public forum on the increase in opioid-related overdoses that continue to impact Loudoun County and our surrounding community.  The forum will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 6:30PM at the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office headquarters located at 803 Sycolin Road, Leesburg, VA.  At the meeting we will explore an open discussion on the efforts we can take together to crack down on heroin abuse.

It is always a pleasure to serve the 10th Congressional District of Virginia.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.
