News from Representative Sánchez

Dear Friend,

Government officials, whether elected or appointed, are accountable to the residents in the communities they represent. As your voice in the House of Representatives, I never forget this as I fight each day to make life better for working families I am fortunate to represent. It is my job to ensure a brighter future for the next generation and conduct proper oversight over the executive branch.

Unfortunately, the troubling actions by President Trump and his administration have distracted from the urgent work that the American people sent their Members of Congress to Washington to do. These actions have resulted in little more than toothless criticisms rather than genuine attempts to hold the president accountable and mitigate the substantial damage being done by this administration.

That is why I have introduced several pieces of legislation to increase transparency in our federal government. The FAIR Act and RIGGED Act would strengthen existing anti-nepotism laws and bring the financial disclosure process for the president into conformity with the rest of the federal government. In addition to championing these bills, I have also joined with my colleagues to introduce legislation to compel the president to submit his tax returns to Congress.

There is no shortage of breaking news coming from Washington these days. While I continue opposing efforts by the administration to separate families, sabotage health insurance, and undermine our democratic institutions, please know that I will also continue working with my colleagues on both side of the aisle wherever our community stands to benefit.

I believe we should be spending our time on bipartisan issues that truly help all people. This includes investing in our nation's aging infrastructure, helping families save for retirement, and expanding access to quality, affordable healthcare. Your thoughts on how best to do so are always appreciated.

Sincerely,

Linda Sánchez
Member of Congress

Washington Update

Honoring Journeyman Linemen

Journeyman Linemen build and maintain our electrical power systems. These brave workers put themselves in harm’s way to serve their communities and ensure that Americans have reliable access to electricity. Risking perilous heights and energized electric lines, they represent a crucial and too often forgotten part of our nation’s infrastructure. Recently, I introduced a resolution with several of my colleagues to acknowledge the hard labor that these brave men and women do every day.

Fighting to Keep Smog at Bay

I remember all too well the frequent smog alerts our region experienced when I was child. Kids were told to stay indoors because the air outside was so harmful to breathe for extended periods of time. That is why I have been so alarmed at the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) effort to weaken important protections, from fuel economy standards for cars and trucks to restrictions on pollutants like nitrogen oxides, ozone, and particulate matter that together form smog. Despite a recent change in EPA’s leadership, the agency has made every indication that it will continue to weaken life-saving standards. I have joined with my colleagues at every opportunity to push back on EPA’s shortsighted actions and I will continue to fight for air quality standards that our worthy of our children.

Highlights from the District

This Fourth of July, I joined the residents of La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs to celebrate Independence Day and to reiterate my commitment to helping our community at the federal level. In addition to the barbecues and fireworks, the Fourth is a great reminder of the important democratic values that our country was built upon – equality, liberty, and justice.
