Dear Friend,

I would like to update you on some of the work we've been doing in Washington, D.C. and Arizona this past week.

Fixing Disparities in Maternal Mortality

It's not every day I get to tell my daughter I met a U.S. Olympic Athlete and World Champion. Thank you Allyson Felix for joining the Ways and Means  hearing to discuss racial disparities in the maternal mortality crisis.

Did you know the United States has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world? Did you know African American women are 3-4 times more likely to experience pregnancy-related deaths than Caucasian women?

This is completely unacceptable, and I am pleased to see my colleagues taking action to increase awareness and find ways to decreases risks and rates of maternal mortality for women in America.

Securing Our Border

This past Thursday, President Trump announced a forward-thinking plan to secure the Southern Border and help increase labor force participation. This plan would help to modernize our outdated system, moving it to a competitive merit-based program.

We cannot continue to put the crisis at our Southern Border on the back-burner in Congress. In 2018, and these first five months of 2019, Customs and Border Patrol agents have seen the largest increase in migration then ever before. Our facilities and agents cannot continue to support the amount of migrants coming in at these rates.

I support a plan that focuses on legal immigration by protecting American workers, increasing safety in our states, and strengthening our labor force. Each month we see the thousands of jobs being added to our economy. We can fill those jobs with an updated merit-based system and help curb the collapse in birth rates that is putting us far below replacement rates.

I hope my colleagues in Washington can all work together to implement a plan to secure our Southern Border and give migrants looking to come here legally employment opportunities. If we want to keep our promises as a society, a merit-based immigration plan will help to fulfill the thousands of opportunities we are adding into the economy each month.

To read more about the plan, how it would impact our country, and how I have been advocating for a merit-based program in Congress, read this opinion piece.

Pro-Growth Climate Technology

Each week, I have joined the House floor to discuss different pillars of what I call my "unified theory." I will make the argument that there are five facets (which I walk through in the video) that we must do to help pay for what we have promised. These promises include programs like Social Security and Medicare. But they also include how we can provide a clean environment and affordable healthcare to future generations.

This week, I focused on climate technology. I am extremely optimistic about the technology we have to help pay for these promises without increasing taxes or crashing our economy. The pro-growth technologies being used in the U.S. and in other countries to help our environment should be widely implemented.

During this speech I walked through a variety of different climate technology options being implemented that we must create access to in the U.S. Click above to watch the full speech.
