A Note from Stephen...

Hello Neighbors!

We are lucky to be in San Diego where the nearly year-round pleasant weather gives usImage plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. And with springtime upon us and longer daylight hours, more and more community members are heading to our city's parks.

In District 3, we are lucky to have a variety of unique parks ranging from large regional parks like Balboa Park and all that it has to offer to smaller neighborhood parks created from previously underutilized spaces such as Tweet Street Park in Cortez Hill.

Many of you have told me how important our parks are to you and I am pleased that a number of parks projects have been completed or are in the works in the area:

-University Heights residents will soon see construction begin on an interim dog park at the San Diego Unified School District Headquarters.

-The brand new North Park Mini Park opened in February.

-Turf renovations have begun at Grape Street Dog Park in Golden Hill.

-Construction is slated to begin on the Normal Street Promenade in Hillcrest next year.

-Children's Park in Downtown is currently undergoing renovations.

These are just a few of the major projects our hardworking Parks & Recreation Department team have in the works and we look forward to continued upgrades. Be sure to check out our city's great parks and recreational spaces this spring!

Best wishes,

It's National Library Week

National Library Week was established in 1958 as a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the United States each April. In San Diego, we are lucky to have a robust public library system that includes 35 branches, Central Library, the READ/San Diego literacy program, and an online presence.

In honor of this week, our District 3 team will be visiting each library in District 3 to celebrate their impact and thank the staff for their hard work every single day. Learn more about the 4 great libraries in our district:

San Diego Central Library

Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Library

North Park Library

University Heights Library

Choose Your Future, Hillcrest!

The City of San Diego launched an interactive platform to help capture what people want Hillcrest to look like in the coming decades.
It focuses on new public spaces such as plazas, promenades and parks, types of new housing, and future mobility options for transit, walking, rolling and bicycling. You can explore concepts and provide your recommendations.
The survey will be open through April 10.

Plant a tree and get a rebate!

Qualifying SDG&E customers can get a rebate for planting or potting eligible tree and plant species.
Not only will the trees planted help beautify our communities, but they’ll also support cleaner air and native biodiversity!
The program is available for qualifying SDG&E customers in Downtown and South Park/Golden Hill. See if you qualify here.

Grape Street Dog Park Turf Renovation

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting with city staff to check out the start of a turf renovation for Grape Street Dog Park

We have heard from many of our residents regarding this park and are happy to see these much-needed improvements are underway. A big thank you to our city workers and the Parks and Recreation Department!

Small Business Spotlight:
Tuetano Taqueria

Chef Priscilla Curiel has dreamed of owning her own restaurant since beginning her career in the food service industry in 2008. After many challenges and a lot of hard work, she finally opened Tuetano Taqueria in San Ysidro in 2018.

After working in San Ysidro the opportunity to move the taqueria to historic Old Town San Diego was presented. Without any hesitation, Priscilla took the risk and moved the shop. Her husband quit his hotel and hospitality job to follow their dreams and Tuetano became a family-owned and dedicated business. Tuetano opened its doors in Old Town in December 2021.

Tuetano Taqueria is located within the Old Town Urban Market at 2548 Congress St. Learn more about them here.
