Dear Friend,

What an exciting first 10 weeks as your representative! It is the honor of my lifetime to serve in Congress and represent Coastal Virginia. Each day I am working hard on behalf of every person living in the 2nd Congressional District.

Right off the bat, I was lucky to be appointed to the House Armed Services Committee and House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Soon afterward, I assumed leadership positions on both committees, as Chair of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs and Vice Chair of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. Given the importance of our military in the Hampton Roads region, I am proud to take leadership roles that will produce bipartisan solutions for active-duty and veteran constituents.

It's been a busy and productive first 2 ½ months. I’m proud to have introduced bipartisan legislation to prevent offshore drilling, preserve the Chesapeake Bay, and provide a much-needed boost in pay to our nation’s veterans.

Unfortunately, the year started with a federal government shutdown that began with the last Congress. Standing in solidarity with our brave TSA workers and Coast Guard, I directed House officials to withhold my pay until the shutdown was over and urged Democratic leadership to compromise so we could reopen government.

I was happy to be part of the solution that ended the shutdown, and I proudly voted for a funding bill that supported climate research, increased funding for NASA, and provided significant new investments for the Coast Guard.

Since then, I’ve supported or voted for legislation that protects public lands, promotes equal pay among men and women, restores the proper constitutional balance between Congress and the White House, and condemns anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry.

In committee, I have advocated for our heroic Blue Water Navy Veterans, challenged our top military leaders to implement important reforms, and pushed for clarity on efforts to secure our borders.

As you may have seen in the news, I will be hosting my first town hall Monday, March 18 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. You have my word that I will continue working hard each day, and I welcome your thoughts!

On Jan. 3, I was sworn in to Congress and hosted an Open House in our Washington office. I am grateful for everyone who made the journey to our nation’s capital.

Our brave U.S. Coast Guard was the only service branch working without pay during the shutdown. In January, I met with Coast Guard members at USCG Station Little Creek in Virginia Beach to thank them for their bravery and service.

It was wonderful meeting with friends at the 8th Annual Virginia Beach Interdenominational Ministers Conference Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast.

On February 13, I had a great time meeting with outstanding Grafton High School students at the Capitol. The 2nd District’s future is bright!

In February, I met with V.A. Secretary Robert Wilkie to discuss ways to help Hampton Roads-area veterans get proper care.

On February 23, I hosted an Open House at our Virginia Beach office! Serving Virginians is the #1 job I have as your representative, and it was wonderful to meet so many of you.

On March 4, I celebrated Read Across America Day with the AWESOME first graders of Diamond Springs Elementary School in Virginia Beach.

On March 12, I had the honor of meeting with the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. For more than a century, this organization has been devoted to civic engagement and making the world a better place. One of my staffers, Dominque, is a Delta!

It was a pleasure to meet in March with the Blinded Veterans Association. As a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I’m beyond proud to fight for the benefits they have earned.
