Dear friends and neighbors,

Senate Republicans released this video to preview the new Advancing Minnesota agenda. I encourage you to check it out and let me know what ideas you have to advance Minnesota. Read on for the highlights from last week’s busy week of session.

Advancing Minnesota – A New Senate Republican Agenda

This week, Senate Republicans announced a forward-looking agenda to advance Minnesota toward a better future. The agenda, termed Advancing Minnesota, is a broad outline of the priorities for the 2017 legislative session and beyond. We are excited to hear your feedback on the plans we have to move forward on tax, transportation, healthcare, and education priorities. Please click here for more details!

Sunday liquor sales passes through Senate committee

Today, the Senate passed legislation to permit Sunday liquor sales in Minnesota. Sunday sales is an issue that comes up at the Capitol every year, but is passed on to deal with another year. This is that year, and this legislature has finally taken the lead and gotten this done for Minnesota.

The law that prevents liquor stores from Sunday sales is from 1858. 159 years later, we know better than to allow the government to infiltrate our economy. There is high demand for purchasing liquor throughout the weekend, and businesses should not be prevented from fulfilling that demand and servicing their customers.

I understand the concerns people on both sides of the aisle have expressed about Sunday sales. But as a free market conservative, I am satisfied that we are taking measures to let businesses do what is best for them and their families and allow the economy to function freely.

Accountability and integrity in elections

I just presented a bill to the State Government Committee that would bring more integrity to the election process. S.F. 581 would prohibit public officials from using their office to influence the outcome of a ballot initiative. It is simply inappropriate for a public employee of any kind to use their position, paid for by taxpayers, to advocate for or against a ballot issue. Public money should never be used to sway voters, and this bill will prevent that from happening in the future.

Constituents Visit for a Day on the Hill

I was pleased to welcome many of groups of constituents to the Capitol for their “Day on the Hill.” Folks from the Minnesota Association of Townships, Minnesota Builders Association, Future Farmers of America, student groups from local colleges, and more took time to visit my office and discuss the great things they are doing for our community. Thank you to all those who stopped by!

Social Security State Tax Debate

Minnesota is one of few states in the country that taxes social security income. While it generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, this policy is causing many of our seniors to move out of the state to avoid added taxes, forcing them to leave their home, family, and communities behind. Wednesday’s Tax Committee hearing was devoted to legislation that would phase out state income taxes on social security benefits. Removing this tax would help these families stay together, plus it would keep them investing in Minnesota’s economy.
