Dear New Yorker:

In my dual role as Acting Public Advocate and New York City Council Speaker, my staff and I are conducting a survey at a number of subway stations across the five boroughs from Monday, January 7, through Friday, January 11.

New York City deserves a world-class transportation system, but unfortunately, due to years of neglect and mismanagement, we don’t have one.

To remedy this unacceptable problem, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently released a plan to restore normal operating service to the subway and bus systems over the next 10 years, updating signal and track infrastructure, purchasing new train cars and buses, and improving accessibility at several stations.  The cost of this plan is estimated at $40 billion.

Restoring the City’s transportation system is going to take a lot of hard work and careful planning over the next several years.  Our most important resource for creating those plans is you – the rider.  If the system isn’t working for you, it isn’t working for New York City.

The purpose of this survey is to learn more about how the transportation system is working for commuters so we can make better, more informed decisions about which improvements should be prioritized.

So if you see us at a subway station this week, please come over, say hi, and take our survey.  It should only take a couple of minutes to complete.

You can also take the survey online in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Russian, Korean, and Chinese.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to let us know about your commute!

In service,

Corey Johnson
Speaker of the New York City Council
Acting Public Advocate for the City of New York
