This week, I was thrilled to announce and introduce Lisa Cano Burkhead as Nevada’s Lt. Governor.  

I am deeply grateful to her husband, Jeff, their daughters Taylor, Raquel, Sofia, and to all her family members who joined us at the press conference in Las Vegas and at the footsteps of Nevada’s Capitol Building as she was sworn into office.   

Lisa was born and raised in Las Vegas, and like many Nevadans, her parents came here to create a better life for their kids.

They found work in our hospitality industry.  
For 25 years, Lisa has been one of our educators. She spent a decade teaching English and Spanish in Clark County schools before becoming the Dean of Students and Assistant Principal at Eldorado High School.  

Lisa’s experience as an educator and as a principal makes her the right person to lead that conversation and lead that work as we recover as a State and as we ensure that all Nevadans – especially our students – have the opportunities they deserve.  

I am grateful for the opportunity of getting to know Lisa, her priorities, her leadership, and I am so excited to get to work together on behalf of the Silver State!

Governor Sisolak joins leadership from LVCVA, Las Vegas Raiders, & partners to announce Super Bowl LVIII will be hosted in Las Vegas in 2024 

I would like to thank the teams at the LVCVA, the Las Vegas Raiders, and partners throughout Nevada who worked tirelessly to submit a successful bid for Super Bowl LVIII (58). No city is as well prepared to welcome football fans from around the world as Las Vegas, and over the next two years, it will help create awareness and excitement about Las Vegas and the entire state.  

The Super Bowl will also bring tremendous opportunity in the form of thousands of full and part-time jobs created, and millions of tax dollars generated that will be reinvested in supporting our community. On behalf of the state of Nevada and the over 3.2 million people that call it home, I would like to thank the NFL and the League owners for recognizing Las Vegas as the ideal place to hold Super Bowl LVIII.  

Governor Sisolak participates in the renaming ceremony of Harry Reid International Airport 

I was humbled by the opportunity to be a part of this historic moment as we gathered to celebrate the renaming of Las Vegas international airport in honor of a fearless leader for Nevada U.S. Senator Harry Reid. He has never forgotten who he is or where he came from.  His story of being born into a family with nothing in Searchlight and rising to one of the most powerful positions in Washington is the story of the American Dream.  

While some passengers may or may not know this outstanding national leader, the State of Nevada will never forget his legacy. We are more than proud to bear the name of a person that has done so much for our State.  

Governor Sisolak signs proclamation affirming that climate change threatens Nevada with aridification   

This week, I signed a proclamation recognizing the significant threats to the economy of the Sagebrush State and the livelihoods of Nevadans from reduced water availability as the outcome of increasing temperatures. The fact higher temperatures would pose challenges to Nevada’s water availability is an inevitable consequence of the physics of climate.  

We are the driest state in the nation and while many stakeholders have done a tremendous job at improving efficiencies, we are all going to be dealing with less water. Though like so many of our great challenges - I know that we will be able to work together as Nevadans to make progress.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: “Fredesvinto”       

North Las Vegas Based Fredesvinto brings Tomato Sauce flavors from Spain 

Monica Marful and her Chef husband Alfonso Fredesvinto Perez moved to North Las Vegas from Madrid in 2011 and soon discovered that their Spanish recipe Tomate Frito was not something they could find in the United States. 

After a few years of research and testing, Monica and Chef Alfonso started their full-flavored fried tomato sauce Fredesvinto which can be purchased online or at any Whole Foods store in Southern Nevada. 

Monica stresses that their sauces are cooked for three hours to get the most flavor from the tomatoes.

“We produce a smooth texture and non-chunky sauce,” Monica said. “It is 100 percent all natural and we don’t add any sugar.” 

In addition to the Original, Garlic, Smoked, and Paprika sauce flavors, Fredesvinto recently added Arrabbiata, Marinara sauces and Tomato Soup. 

Monica, who has a Ph.D. in Marketing, said the pandemic was stressful on their business. She said the assistance she received from the PETS program administered by the Treasurer’s Office and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development helped to keep Fredesvinto afloat. She also credited the Small Business Development Center for their assistance.

Nevada Department of Education, in partnership with Governor Sisolak and Nevada Legislature, Funds 10,993 Nevada Educators Projects through DonorsChoose Grant Program  

On December 13, the Nevada Department of Education announced the completion of the DonorsChoose Grant Program, which was able to fund 10,993 Nevada educators’ projects up to $800 using federal relief funding. Governor Sisolak, Superintendent Ebert, and DonorsChoose CEO Charles Best we’re joined by several State legislators to recognize the program’s impact on Monday, December 13 at J. Less than 30 days remain to enroll in a health insurance plan with Nevada Health Link!  

The deadline to enroll in health coverage through Nevada Health Link is quickly approaching. For those that have yet to enroll, it is important to know that to be insured by January 1, 2022, you must enroll between now and December 31, 2021, and for those that enroll between January 1 and January 15, coverage will begin February 1, 2022. 

A key reason people are hesitant to enroll in health insurance is the price. Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas online exhibit on greeting cards offers window into history 

Ida Browder, who lived in Boulder City during the 1930s, kept every card she was sent for more than four decades. That collection now is at the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas; see some of it in the online exhibit “Greeting Cards: A Window to Our History.” These cards provide insight into the times in which they were written — from the 1920s to the 1950s — as well as changes in the manufacture and design of greeting cards. New Nevada State College Education Building Recognized with Prestigious Design Award

The Nevada State College Glenn and Ande Christenson School of Education Building, a recently completed State Public Works Project, has been recognized with an Honor Design Award by the American Institute of Architects Nevada Chapter. The two-story, 67,260-square-foot facility includes classrooms, hands-on learning spaces, a speech pathology clinic, faculty offices, collaboration spaces, and an Early Childhood Development Center that is a state-of-the-art preschool with an innovative educational environment in which to train new preschool teachers to help alleviate a critical teacher shortage in Nevada. 

The project was a collaboration between the Nevada State Public Works Division, the Nevada State College, and designed and built by Nevada-based businesses Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects and Burke Construction Group, respectively. Learn more about the project here.
