If You're Not Counted, You're Not Represented

Dear San Franciscan,

The Census is a pillar of our democracy and is essential to ensuring that all are equally counted and represented, so that we can meet the needs of all who call America home. Every ten years, the U.S. Census Bureau counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the territories in order to allocate $1 trillion in funding and resources for schools, community initiatives and public works as well as congressional representation, and more.

The 2020 Census will be the first in history to be conducted mostly online. The Census is available in 12 languages online, over the phone, and through a paper form. There are also language guides for the 2020 Census in 59 Languages.

Congresswoman Pelosi joined San Francisco city officials to kickoff outreach efforts by local community organizations in advance of the upcoming Census.

Last year, House Democrats fought all the way to the Supreme Court when the President attempted to add a citizenship question that would have injected fear into undercounted and vulnerable communities. To be clear – there will be NO citizenship question on the 2020 Census and you will NOT be asked for your social security number or your immigration status. Everyone in the Bay Area and across the U.S. can be sure that personal information will never be used against any community. Your 2020 Census responses are completely confidential, and the Census Bureau is required to protect your personal information and keep it strictly confidential.

House Democrats remain vigilant to ensure a full, fair and accurate Census to protect all communities, especially those who have been traditionally undercounted and underrepresented. To make participation easy and accessible, the House secured $7.56 billion in critical Census funding to ensure maximum participation and inclusion, including by expanding access to computers and high speed broadband. We will continue to work to make sure that the 2020 Census captures the full beauty and diversity that makes our nation strong and our city a place to truly call home.

The U.S. Census Bureau continues to carefully monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. Responding online, by phone, or by mail will minimize the need to send census takers out into the community and will protect the health of all. As the situation develops, the Census Bureau is prepared to adjust normal operations as needed, following the guidance of federal, state and local health authorities. For additional information on what measures are being taken to respond to COVID-19, please consult the following Census Bureau guidance.

More information on how one can participate in this upcoming Census is available here. A public helpline is now active. The public may respond by phone, they have a toll-free phone number: 1-844-330-2020 available every day from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. EDT.
