May 30, 2017

Federal funding will be used for the construction of de-icing pads

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today announced that the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority received a $22,500,000.00 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the construction of a 300,000 square yard deicing pad collection area at Memphis International Airport. This will be phase 1 of an estimated 5 phases of construction and includes the relocation of a road and construction of taxiway bridges.

"Memphis International Airport is a critically important transportation and cargo hub in the Mid-South region," said Congressman Cohen. "These new federal funds will be used to ensure the airport can operate efficiently and effectively during the winter months."

Memphis International Airport is a world-class facility that today serves more than 4 million passengers per year. Dedicated in 1929 as the Memphis Municipal Airport with just two major carriers, the airport now hosts several national carriers as well as the FedEx "Super Hub." Memphis International has grown into the busiest cargo airport in the country, and is the second busiest in the world —behind only Hong Kong.
