Cohen’s Statement on the Announced Resignation of U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton III

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement on the announced resignation of U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee Ed Stanton III:

"I thank Memphis native Ed Stanton III for his admirable service to this nation as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee," said Congressman Cohen. "I first met Ed Stanton when he was in private practice as a lawyer in Memphis and I was a Tennessee State Senator. He and I worked together on a transportation project for Memphis and later served together on the Center City Commission. The Western District of Tennessee has had an exceptional record of service from its U.S. Attorneys, and Ed Stanton was no exception. I was proud to recommend Ed Stanton to President Barack Obama for this position in 2010 and to later recommend him to serve as District Court Judge for the Western District of Tennessee in 2015. I thank the former President for appointing him as U.S. Attorney and for nominating him to become a federal judge. I remain disappointed, however, that despite unanimous approval by the Senate Judiciary Committee and support from both Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell never brought Ed Stanton's nomination to a vote before the full Senate even though his nomination was next in line to be approved."

Congressman Cohen continued, "I appreciate Ed Stanton's work during his tenure as U.S. Attorney. All Memphians should be proud of Ed Stanton's service to our country."
