Congressman Cohen Cautions Those Awaiting Economic Impact Payments They May Come in the Form of Debit Cards

May 30, 2020

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today cautioned those still awaiting an Economic Impact Payments from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that the payments may come in the mail in the form of debit cards. Some four million Americans who don't receive the payments by direct deposit to their bank accounts or by checks in the mail will be receiving the payment in the form of a debit card.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"It has come to my attention that some people have not recognized the debit cards in the mail from the IRS as their Economic Impact Payment, and may have inadvertently thrown them away. I urge my constituents to be attentive to this possibility."

The IRS began making Economic Impact Payments in April as part of the economic stimulus package authorized by Congress in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The law authorized $1,200 payments to individuals, $2,400 for married couples and $500 for dependent children under 17 pursuant to some income eligibility requirements.
